The "dream" was coming along fine until the closet racists saw a black man in the White House. Then they decided "this has gone far enough!" I really didn't believe we had so many "working undercover" (even in Congress). It's a shame on America. As MLK said: "Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." Side: Color of their skin
A majority of the nation voted a black man into the white house twice, and this signaled a decline in race relations? Perhaps having a black man in the white house made it very easy for Democrats to present any opposition to his positions as racially motivated. Perhaps painting political differences as racial bias creates the illusion of racism where there is only disagreement of policy. In that case, race relations would have actually improved or remained steady while the perception of race relations has become less accurate and more divisive. If a persons character is judged poorly, we must now, more than ever, account for the color of that persons skin before we express our judgment, lest we be branded a racist. Of course today's racism can only apply to white people, since black people lack the institutional power to be racist. As such, any racial divide in the country is the fault, and responsibility, of the institutionally powerful. That is to say, it's the fault and responsibility of white people. We have now arrived at a social construct wherein we can place blame and responsibility for certain problems based on the color of ones skin, rather than the content of ones character. Republicans didn't create that construct. Side: Color of their skin
The idea that racism today is only from whites is stupid. There is much black to white racism. The problem is it doesn't hold whites back. Black to white racism is "revenge racism", that doesn't make it right. The racism that bothers U.S. is the "Jim Crow" racism, the Paul Le Page And Sherriff Arpaio (sp?) racism that just think there should be "special laws" for "those other people". Black lives matter is NOT saying other lives don't matter, it's just saying there is an OBVIOUS imbalance in justice for a dead "black" STILL! The rage against the black lives matter movement shows, clearly, the Jim Crow mentality is still "alive and kickin' "! Anyone who can't see the racial imbalance doesn't WANT to see it. True, many angry and some just "bad" African Americans continually hurt themselves AND their race. A couple hundred years of the hate caused by racism will not go away overnight, and even over a generation or two, but, a reasonable fairness in how the law is administered would speed things up. "All lives matter", certainly, but there is an obvious "Oh, well" to "some people". Side: Content of their Character

We've come a long way. I don't have personal experience with race relations in the US, but I can say for certain that it's excellent where I live in the UK. I'm both surprised and pleased to say that I don't know, nor have I ever met a racist. It's pretty incredible. Obviously there are still some twats out there, but they're a huge minority thankfully. I believe most people are indeed judged by the content of their character. However, I believe the legacy of generations of bigotry still means certain groups still have less advantage to get ahead in life. Hey, you can wake up from the dream but still not be in avalon yet. I agree that most people do judge by character. I think pop culture would like it to be otherwise. I believe that the attempts by our government to make up for generations of bigotry has done more damage to the current generation than did that legacy. Side: Color of their skin
