GOAT is a terrible acronym and could have been done better
G.O.A.T. - Greatest Of All Time. Whose the GOAT of this, or that? Sounds horrible. Reminds me of "Got your Goat" which is a negative. It's not hard to dream up comparable acronyms: 1) BAT (Best All Time; "Who is your BATman?"), 2) GOD (Greatest On Deck; kind of even alludes to collectors' cards that way), 3) NOW (Number One Weapon; kind of alludes to fantasy team selection). And even if you don't like these alternatives, why not just say "Greatest"?
Apparently it became a positive based on an LL Cool J song. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.O.A.T. BUT, for decades before that it was used in sports to designate someone who really choked and lost. How does one rap song justify total reversal of a tradition for decades? I thought the exact same thing when Chris Jericho started wearing GOAT on his trunks. It was incredibly confusing until I looked it up. |
