Gay bullying

In the past few months, at least half a dozen young men have taken their own lives due to the relentless harassment by their classmates, invasion of their privacy, and a feeling of not conforming to society the way they "should".  This is happening to gay students all over the country, making some of them feel like second class citizens.  What should be done?  Is it just a few cases being blown out of proportion, or should the country do something to stop this?

I'd like to argue that it should be stopped and it should, the problem as I see it is in the fact that bullying itself cannot be stopped. The issue of Homosexuality has for most parts become a lot more socially accepted life, but negative ideas are hard to breed out of a system and Homophobia encouraged by religious teachings is one die hard prejudice.

Bullying is already difficult to eradicate because people choose to pick on those who are different and since nobody is a robot, it is a natural force of being human.

If bullying in general will never fade, neither will gay bullying.

Two Options:

STAND UP AND FIGHT BACK

or

JUST TAKE THE ABUSE

If it were a black student being teased or harassed, the school would step in and have a fit.

If it were a Mexican student was being messed with, people would stop it.

If it was a special Ed student being picked on, you'd go to jail.

Why is being gay/lesbian any different?

If students are harassed to the point that they feel the need to commit suicide, there has to be something wrong. I know kids are mean, but making fun of someone for who they are is a hate crime, especially if the person didn't choose to be that way.

if making fun of someone for being different is a hate crime, then its a victimless crime. There is no reason why words or even being a social outcast should cause someone to harm themselves. I used to have a speech impediment, and be terribly shy, institutions tried to help me and all they did was make things worse. Its best to realize that when someone makes fun of you, its because of THEM, not you. The people that killed themselves accepted someone else's view of them, they willingly accepted an identity they did not like and killed themselves because they lacked the mental capacity to cope with that identity, and they had a strong desire to be something they couldn't. The best way to stop gay bullying, is to teach gay youth some independence of mind, to get rid of the need to be accepted by most people, and most importantly: to accept who they are and the people who makes fun of them for what they are: nothing of importance unless they allow them to be.

If students are harassed to the point of committing suicide, yes there is indeed something wrong; they have the values of the herd and are willing to play the martyr to it. It should be the other way, the herd should feed the Shepard, and if they give you trouble: beat it with a stick :) .

Except for those who suffer it. They count as victims.

There is no reason why words or even being a social outcast should cause someone to harm themselves.

The more the words are repeated, the more convinced the victim becomes that they are true. When a victim believes that they are an abomination and of no use to the world, they seek to remove themselves.

I used to have a speech impediment, and be terribly shy, institutions tried to help me and all they did was make things worse.

Then you should know better.

Its best to realize that when someone makes fun of you, its because of THEM, not you.

Correct, but to expect everybody to realise this is perverse. In addition, such moral high ground is near useless when you have no friends, and nobody who cares for you or even deigns to speak to you other than to insult you.

The people that killed themselves accepted someone else's view of them

You're over-simplifying it. Almost nobody can withstand sustained social exclusion and harassment. It's all well and good being who you are, but without friends, the colour starts to fade from life. You wake up in the morning and you can't think of a reason to get out of bed. You know that you will march straight into the face of abuse, a vicious, focused attack upon your identity.

they willingly accepted an identity they did not like and killed themselves because they lacked the mental capacity to cope with that identity

You are placing the blame with the victim, which in this case cannot be justified by calling them weak.

and they had a strong desire to be something they couldn't.

It is the desire to be accepted above all else.

The best way to stop gay bullying, is to teach gay youth some independence of mind, to get rid of the need to be accepted by most people, and most importantly: to accept who they are and the people who makes fun of them for what they are: nothing of importance unless they allow them to be.

What's the point? It's a "victimless crime".

they have the values of the herd and are willing to play the martyr to it.

I prevail upon your own sense of self-worth (which you would have us believe is great indeed) in saying that not all people are blessed with so penetrating an insight into the minds of the victims and the instigators. You are erecting a barrier of insensitivity to hide your own need for acceptance. I should know, I did it. Perhaps when you grow up you'll realise that this is no way to carry on.

It should be the other way, the herd should feed the Shepard, and if they give you trouble: beat it with a stick

I have found that those with no talent for control or leadership often classify themselves as leaders. It is a pathetic attempt to justify their ostracism. You are not a shepherd, you are the black sheep.

The very thought of bullying being good in any case is completely absurd and witless, people who go through there lives having each day a day of pain and sorrow and marking each day given to them a curse is the point bullying needs! to stop, the mere fact that people are being bullied for what what sex they would rather be with is stupid and pointless and ANYONE who bullies a person for being gay is most likely jealous or don't like that fact that they are more comfortable with there sexuality, and any abuse of gay people should be met with harsh consequences, bullies need to get it in there head that bullying follows the bullied for all there lives especially when it is consistently done, i do really hope you all agree, and as for 'kids being kids' how a kid finds suffering fun is really quite horrid.
