Carlin always captured that moment of recognizing stupidity perfectly. He grabbed the audiences attention and focused it on the constant stream of ridiculousness from people in power in life while keeping it funny.

Side: Carlin wins

Combine the era, the ongoing issues, the face and the savvy...what have you got? Richard Pryor, one of the most brilliant comedic minds ever to hit the boards. Pryor knew his audience and what they wanted to hear. He gave them that and more. He gave them permission to laugh as they lived in the streets as everyone from a black youth to a classic drunk to an eldery man filled with memories with his classic blend of the absurd, the real and the "right-on bro" world of the 70's and 80's. His talent extended to the screen in 1972 when he joined Diana Ross in the somewhat weighty role as her "Piano Man" in "Lady Sings The Blues." He was seriously funny in that role as well. Whatever it was that makes people laugh, Pryor had it in abundance and the laughter began as soon as he walked on stage.

Although they were both a bit before my time, of what I've seen of their work I have to go with Richard Pryor. He was not afraid to take the issues straight on and found a way to discuss serious issues while making them hilarious. My favorite set of his was the one below, where he talks about making a movie in prison.

Richard Pryor...hands down...not only was he a great comedian but he was a good actor as well. I loved his facial features. His loose energy filled the stage.

R.I.P. George Carlin.

Southern smiles and world peace,
