God is Dead! But Not In The Way You Think....

Politically He Is......

The decline of religion is unstoppable. It is in my humble opinion the fact that I believe Christianity or at least following it meaningfully and effecting politics will significantly decline in the next century. Some point to areas such as the increasing "Christianization" of Africa as proof that Christianity will not decline in the world and point to films such as God Loves Uganda as proof. Here is why I believe it will decline and believe that the above

Firstly, I will focus on the obvious, religion has been declining in the public life for years. It has lost in the public sphere on the culture wars, modern feminism, while things such as gay marriage are now inevitable and unstoppable. I would not even be shocked if the Southern Baptist Convention apologises on the issue like they did with slavery in 50 years. Thinking anything else is simple wishful thinking.

Even things such as church services have declining in recent years. This following graph below symbolizes church attendence for Roman Catholics. Again, it shows a decline of religion.

I also see a popular opinion from videos such as this which supports the idea that Christianity will magically take over African countries. This is untrue as well if anyone wants to challenge me. I am running out of space so I will simply back my ideas up in the comments below.

As a religious person I have to agree. Mostly because our pastor did a whole 3 week segment about how Christianity/Catholicism is declining. I don't see this information as false.

I do agree that more people are choosing to live secular lives. It's not surprising, for several reasons. People's lives are becoming more and more fast paced, not trying to be rude, but they don't have time for religion anymore. Following almost any religion takes time, time that people don't believe they have anymore. Also, certain Scientific discoveries that people don't believe co-exist with Religion, therefore they choose to stop following the faith.

This data clearly supports the claim that, at least in western culture, over the last 50 years, there is a decline in relevance of religion. Noting in the first graph that most of the shift took place roughly 30 years ago. What caused that to happen.

The second chart can be more easily explained. There is a shift in acceptance of homosexuality. IMO this has come about because of a deeper understanding and a growing awareness of the mechanism of gender orientation. I think religion will adjust.

The final chart shows an effect of the first chart over the same 50 years.

Interestingly there are separate traces on the chart for different ages. Again the greatest part of the shift took place about 30 years ago. With the additional fact that people in their 20's attended least. Then they attended church more as they aged.

The debate as presented, seems to ask "Is this happening". The answer is yes. If the question of "Why is this happening" were asked, the comments would be much more interesting.

What caused that to happen.

I think the invention of the internet is what happened. Now that it's so easy to find information religion can't keep people in the dark anymore. Before the internet was invented people only heard the opinions of the friends, family, religious leaders, TV and books, but that information was very limited, unlike the vast wealth of information that is available on the internet today.

But the biggest part of the change happened some 30 years ago. Before the Internet. So it must be something else. What happened in western culture from the mid 1950's to the 1070's that could have taken young people away from religion in such numbers?

Maybe the reason religion is going by the way side is because of all the benefits of being an atheist ;)

Most of Catholics Church influence in the past came from extremely brutal and violent behavior toward anybody who disagreed with their dogma. Systematic mass slaughtering of whole cities and nations. Catholic Church was held in power by fear.

Now they have nothing to offer, few idiotic rituals (symbolic cannibalism, drinking blood - eating flesh), weird smelly rituals done by guy in colorful skirt and pointy hat, who pretends that in his book of magic contains some hidden ultimate truth which he is willing to share with you but only if you let him control your sex life and give him money.

"The truth" supposes to be a magical wonderland where you should end up in you'll do the proper magical rituals enough times.... but if you refuse to do so you will end up in boiling water in infinite pain for billions and billions of years, because you know ...god loves you.

"God is dead" is misleading because he never lived in the first place.
