Google Glasses: great advancement in technology, or unnecessary and antisocial gadget?

Recently I heard about a product that will be making an appearance within the next few years called "Google Glasses". Read more here:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/google-glasses-dont-plan-on-buying-them-for-christmas/2012/04/06/gIQAf595zS_story.html

My first thought when I heard about them was "wow, everyone will be walking around on the street with their computers right in front of their faces...what will happen to social interaction?"

Now, this is arguably already an issue, what with smartphone users who don't know when to look up and see the world around them. But Google Glasses take it to a new level.

With the advent of this technology, do you think users will get sucked into the program, becoming completely unaware of their surroundings, isolating themselves in their own little world?

--OR--

Do you think that this is a wonderful advancement in human technology that will be a great convenience for any user?

Keep it relatively intelligent, folks!

I fail to see how even current tech is less "social" than previous modes of communication allowed. If anything it is far more social. The problem is that the older generation doesn't recognize the new forms of communication as legitimate.

Tech like the google glasses has long been theorized and anticipated, and will allow for even more social links and connections.

The device is really cool, but sad to say that is merely for developer use only. They never sell this for individual use.

Anyway, I rather stay with my iPad mini device instead ( I got personalize case from http://www.kekacase.com/design-your-own/ custom-case-for-the-ipad-mini.html )

Hi there I think most advances made in technology are good this actually sounds amazing . I also think people tend to worry too much about negative social impacts , I remember when video games first came out and people saying they would totally destroy society , it's part of the life process really we keep moving or stagnate .many years ago the Luddites destroyed machinery in a bid to stop industrialisation and save jobs but technology still won the day. An interesting question .

It is just another gadget that the tech fanatic just has to own.

Being a teenager, I'm not against technology at all, as long as it serves a purpose. It can be argued that these glasses can allow a more user-friendly way to surf the web, but I fail to see the "need" for that kind of nonstop connection to technology. People are bad enough now with their smartphones. Look around on the street. Everyone is looking down at their phones, on Facebook, or tweeting CONSTANTLY. I admit, I do it too, but that is the societal norm now. An outsider or a senior citizen that doesn't own a cell phone or tablet would look at the majority of society with disbelief, probably thinking that we are paranoid of our surroundings. The image that this scenario presents suggests that every time we check our twitter, or Facebook, etc., we are monitoring our personal lives because we have to know everything that happens in real time. With the explosion of devices that bring social media to our fingertips, we have developed a compulsory obsession to check our messages or notifications to make sure that we don't miss anything. I notice this more and more when I text my friends. It is extremely rare that the time between sending a message and receiving the reply exceeds 5 minutes. It is for these reasons that I feel that making the attachment to technology stronger is not in our best interest as a society. We need to preserve the importance of social interaction and face-to-face conversation. Honestly, its not that hard to take your phone out of your pocket, and if it is, then you need to leave your phone at home for a few days and experience the world through more than a touch screen.
