Fact: Owning a gun puts you at heightened risk for gun violence By this logic, if I support police, I should want to disarm them so they don’t get shot. Fact: Armed citizens rarely successfully intervene to stop an active shooter Cops are good guys with guns who most often stop active shooters, if not directly than indirectly. Fact: A small percentage of mass shootings occur in locations where guns are prohibited A small percentage of locations are gun free zones, though many are gun free. Fact: Gun laws are effective at reducing gun violence Tell it to urban centers where local gun laws are more strict than rural settings where gun violence is much lower and legal ownership much higher. The fact is that culture has much more to do with gun violence than gun laws. Less violent criminals in a culture equals less gun violence, regardless of guns. That’s why as the US has gotten more effective policing, we have seen a general reduction in violent crime rates coincide with a rise in gun ownership. Also, not all gun laws are created equal so more does not equal better. I’ve proven these points several times over with statistics from the CDC and other unbiased statistical sources (ie unrelated to the gun debate). All you have is thinkprogress.org, who thinks that I am literally more susceptible to the causes of suicide if I own a gun. Side: Fact
His position is that it is false to say that good guys with guns stop bad guys with guns. Police are good guys with guns, and from what I understand, most of them carry off duty. They carry off duty in the off chance that they may need it for the same reasons other people carry. Because they are good guys with with guns. Side: Fact

Myth: Owning a gun makes you safer This is neither true nor is it a gun lobbyist talking point, which makes it a straw man. Guns are dangerous, as gun advocates are quick to point out. Owning a gun cannot, in and of itself, make you safer. In competent hands it may. Myth: The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun On occasion, Shooters kill their selves. Though that’s usually because good guys with guns are closing in. Yes, cops are good guys with guns. Yes, they stop shooters. Myth: Mass shooters specifically target gun-free zones Multiple mass shooters have been known to do this. Typically this would be when they target strangers in the hopes of effecting the highest kill count possible, as in many high profile shootings. However, it cannot be said to be mass shooters most common mode due to the definition of mass shooting which can include gang violence and other crimes which result in high gun casualties. Fact: Gun laws are effective at reducing gun violence That’s true in areas where people have a law abiding culture. This is because culture has a greater impact on violent crime, including gun crime. Not all laws are created equal. Most of what we is pretended to be proposed by politicians are things that either already exist or things that would not have stopped the crime for which they went on TV. Side: Myth
