Has the Socratic Method fallen on hard times in this age of relativism and post modernism.

I find myself often frustrated in conversations because in my pursuit of truth I often use the Socratic Method. But in this age of relavitisim were the difference between preference and truth has been blurred and the pursuit of truth is dead. Is it an exercise in futility to pursue truth with those who believe that to be the case.

The Socratic method is more or less completely besided on this site; and instead is replaced by opinions, opinions based on influences such as societal norms, religion, and culture. Sad, but true.

There is a spirit of this age that seems suspect of coming to conclusions and convictions about things. I find this troubling because there is a teleology to the Socratic Method, its meant to arrive at something. But if coming to conclusions and convictions is dead then the Socratic Method becomes only a mental exercise in futility. Do I think the Socratic Method can give us certainty, no. But I think it can take us beyond a reasonable doubt.

So what I am saying is if there is no truth to pursue or conclusions and convictions to come to,than what is the point of using the Socratic Method.

And if we use it does it tell us something about our deepest convictions about reality.

The Socratic method is basically asking questions till your opponent reaches a contradiction in their reasoning; their position should be able to give consistent answers to related questions. This can be done to give evidence to relativism and post-modernism; their not mutually exclusive.

A lot of people don't have the patience for a series of questions. Other opinions are basically alternative answers to some of the same questions they answered. The Socratic method becomes implicit instead of explicit. Its less structured, but its existent. People hold on to their beliefs because they base their identity on their views, an attack on their views is an attack on them; That is why a lot of people are not very good at debate. Occasionally you have two people arguing and neither want to reevaluate their position, but the existent of the other position is a challenge so you end up with a screaming match; eventually they will ignore each other if they don't kill each other. When such a person encounters someone willing to reevaluate their position, they can do nothing but lose(mentally). those people are known as trolls here. Willingness to evaluate is a continuum and changes based on the issue.

Socratic Method is not entirely dead. Of course in sites like this there are always riots of people who do not want to stimulate critical thinking. Even in day to day life we always find blind-minded people who just donĀ“t care for the truth or to understand things. Most human beings want an easy life without have the need to think. The good thing is that we can still find persons who use this method. I know a few but they really are a minority. But we still breath.
