Hello. My name is Karishma Gupta and I believe that homework should be banned.

Assertion: Homework is done after a long tiring day of school.

Reasoning: The child is already tired after a long day at school. As a result, few students do their best when they have to sit down in the evening to do more work. Homework ends up being done in a hurry and poor quality work is produced.

Evidence: Some students stay up late at night to try to finish their homework. As a result, the students come to school tired the next day and are less ready to learn.

Source: debatewise.org

Assertion: Students get no exercise.

Reasoning: Students have to sit all day at school. When they get home, they have to sit some more and do their homework. By the time their done, it's time to go to bed. As a result, they don't have any time for physical activity.

Evidence: During the week and sometimes on the weekends, the student is busy doing the work at school and then homework at home. They don't get any time to play sports or do any physical activity.

Source: www.trentinternational.org

Assertion: Children can spend more time with their family.

Reasoning: If we ban homework, children can spend more time with their family. Parents rarely get to have conversations with their kids because their kid is busy doing homework. Kids could spend time with their parents and have family bonding time.

Evidence: The only time kids can talk to their parents is on the weekends. However, the kids get homework on the weekend too.

Now to sum up all my points. I think that we should ban homework because students get no exercise, homework is done after a long tiring day of school, and children can have more time with their families.

My name is Karishma Gupta and I believe that homework should be banned. Thank You.

Rebuttal:

Rebuttal to Assertion 1: The alternative, however, to students spending their time on homework is them watching TV or playing games. They would forget the material and still probably end up sleeping late. Homework would serve as a reminder of the material that was reviewed that day and hereby assist the child with the coming exam.

Rebuttal to Assertion 2: There are physical education or gym classes during the day for the student to receive a healthy supplement of exercise. In addition many kids want to play outside more than they want to do homework so they find time in their schedule to play sports or participate in physical activity. As a result, homework ends up teaching kids how to manage their time better so they can complete their work and play.

Rebuttal to Assertion 3: In many families, homework is a family affair. Students ask their parents or older siblings for help, resulting in the family bonding over the homework.

Hello. My name is Aleena Kelkar and I believe that homework should be banned.

Assertion 1-Homework leads to overwhelmed, cranky kids.

Reasoning 1- Kids are already tired from school, so homework puts extra pressure on them. This results in stressed out kids.

Reasoning 2- Not completing homework affects your grades, which puts stress on you to make up for it.

Reasoning 3-You spend a lot of time(about 45-50 mins) on homework, which gives you less sleep. You then wake up cranky.

Evidence 1-. According to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2006 poll, 80 percent of teens don’t get the recommended amount of sleep. At least 28 percent fall asleep in school and 22 percent fall asleep doing homework.

Evidence 2-According to the American Psychological Association, typical schoolchildren today report more anxiety than did child psychiatric patients in the 1950s.

Source-http://stophomework.com/fact.pdf

Assertion 2-Homework is a waste of time.

Reasoning 1-It is repeating what students have learned in school, which is not useful to students.

Reasoning 2-There is no relationship between homework and grades.

Reasoning 3-Since there are no teachers to supervise, students can learn to do homework the wrong way and waste time.

Evidence 1-According to a 2001 review of more than 120 studies of homework and its effects by Professor Harris Cooper of Duke University, the country’s leading homework researcher, and his updated 2006 review of an additional sixty studies, there is very little correlation between the amount of homework and achievement in elementary school and only a moderate correlation in middle school.

Evidence 2-Many countries with the highest scoring students on achievement tests, such as Japan, Denmark, and the Czech Republic, have teachers who assign little homework. Meanwhile, countries such as Greece, Thailand, and Iran, where students have some of the worst average scores, have teachers who assign a lot of homework.

Assertion 3-Students get less exercise and fall sick.

Reasoning 1-They are spending too much time on homework, so they get very little time to exercise.

Reasoning 2- They get too tired to play outside after homework. There brains are tired from homework and they do not feel like doing anything after it.

Reasoning 3-Their sleeping time and eating time become very erratic because of the amount of homework and eventually fall sick.

Evidence 1-Kids are more sedentary than ever before, and homework is a contributing factor. Since 1981, the amount of time kids spend playing sports has decreased by 58 percent for six- to eight-year-olds, 19 percent for nine- to eleven-year- olds, 43 percent for twelve- to fourteen-year-olds, and 28 percent for fifteen- to seventeen-year-olds

Evidence 2-According to a 2004 report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) of the Department of Health and Human Services. Even since 2000, there’s been a significant increase: 17.1 percent of American kids between the ages of two and nineteen are now considered overweight.

3. Having a lot of homework cuts off family time.

R: Students sit in school all day and then come home to do even more work. By the time they are done, it is time for bed. They get no exercise which is not healthy.

E: Empirical studies have linked excessive homework to sleep disruption, indicating a negative relationship between the amount of homework, perceived stress and physical health.

R: But for elementary school students, even 30 minutes of homework a night, if combined with other sources of academic stress, can have a negative impact. Researchers in China have linked homework of two or more hours per night with sleep disruption.

E:Almost 10 percent of fourth graders worldwide reported spending multiple hours on homework each night. Globally, one in five fourth graders report 30 minutes or more of homework in math three to four times a week.

R:Little time is left for family activities and parents feel the stress of either helping children complete the work or policing them to make sure they do it on their own.

E: A 2002 survey reported that 64 percent of children between the ages of six and eight have homework on any given day—twice what the workload was in 1981.

I sympathise with your sentiments. And, in actual fact, I agree that homework is superfluous. I think the answer is a compromise; homework still exists, but just far reduced in quantity.

Alternatively, perhaps instead of homework as it's currently constituted, pupils could simply be requested to spend 30 minutes after school to memorise what they see in a textbook.

I agree with you Demi. Homework wastes kids' time when they can be getting in shape. Homework can harm students because 4,317 students in 10 high-performing California high schools — six private and four public — had an average of 3.1 hours of homework a night. Some kids use twice that. It can negatively affect kids because Every school day 7,000 teenagers become high school dropouts. It cuts off family time and that can lead to poor chemistry and poor behavior by the student.

Public education should be abolished in general. If you've read anything critical on Public "Education" you'd know this. Homework is a tool by the educational system to follow you home. If you try it will threaten your grade and If you are dumb enough to fall for the threat you are now being forced to do something you most likely have no interest in already. Grades and school are a complete joke to me until they have it so the test determines your grade and what you know. Not who can do the most classwork.

Unless the classes are standard. For example we had 3 two hour classes in high school. and mondays we attended all classes which were standard times. i feel all non high school students should have homework art least to keep parents up to date with their children's studies. i help my son do his homework, he's a second grader and some of the stuff we go over i even have to look up and relearn(yea i'm not smarter than a 5th grader at times). so i feel its needed at the lower grade levels but not high school.

#1: Physicians say that homework affects child’s health and causes stress

If students get a lot of homework, when will they have time to do other stuff? Children would not have time to play outside and relax. Judge, isn’t your health more important than your studies? If you are not healthy, how can you even have strength and energy to study? If students have lot of homework and if they need to finish before the next day, the students will feel more stressed and pressured to not get detention at school.

According to CNN, physicians argued that children need about 6-7 hours a day of fresh air and sunlight. Kids need to be actively engaged in physical activities, but homework comes in the way and stops it. According to Stanford University’s survey data, 56% of students consider homework as primary source of stress. Less than 1% viewed homework as not a stressor. Other survey among children complained of health issues like sleep diversion, headaches, exhaustion and weight loss.

#2: In-equality in types of situation of people

Each kid has a different situation. They might have a situation where, they have to take care of their siblings, or their parents might come late from work. When will the children have time to ask their parents help on their work? There are also poor kids who wouldn’t have neat and calm environment to work on their homework. Students could have parents who help them, so their homework would be better than those whose parents cannot help them.

According to abcnews.com, French president Francois is debating to ban Homework in his country. The issue of inequality was a main reason for the proposed ban. He argues that homework is for wealthy kids, where kids are more likely to have good working environment at home and also have parents time and energy to help with their work.

#3: Students do not have time for other activities

Many students have other important stuff such as church activities, sports, clubs, volunteer work, jobs, family things, hobbies, relaxation, etc. How can students lead a creative life, when they are piled up with homework? When will they have time to do other activities? Homework will get in the way of these important stuff that are part of life.

It is important that children also have spare time for themselves. There is a risk that exam pressure can lead to excessive time spent on homework thus undermining opportunities for young people to develop character, skills and qualities to be successful in life.

#4: More Homework hours lowers test performance

Loading children with hours of homework each night causes more harm, while an hour or two per week usually does not impact test scores in anyways. There was an assumption that by adding more homework hours, improves students’ performance in tests. But according to Huffington post reports, a group of Australian researchers concluded that, piling students on homework doesn’t help kids do better at schools. They concluded their findings based on the aggregated results of the studies of relationship between time spent on homework and students’ academic performance. According to Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, data shows that in countries where more time is spent on homework, students score lower on a standardized PISA tests. Similar results are also found when comparing homework time and test performance at schools within countries.

Donahomeworkldningishingssertion: Homework causes stress

Reasoning:

Children sometimes have too much homework and they miss out on the soothing relaxation and play time that they deserve. In fact, they even stay up late while doing homework. This is clinically proven to increase stress and decrease productivity and ability to learn will diminish. Stress leads to negative thoughts and negative re-inforcements and this causes building up anger and frustration of “lack of accomplishing” and “lack of concentration or learning”. If their craving for learning stops at a younger age, this will be detrimental to learn anything later in life. This can affect their jobs, their success and thewell beinging in general

Assertion: Homework makes children miss out on effective family time

Reasoning:

When a child comes home with lot of homework, he or she need to sit down, eat a snack and immediately start on doing the huge amount of work that is given that day. Their parents ask him/her to have his/her downtime, but the child’s reply is “Sorry, I Can’t! I need to finish my homework”. This means, that homework is restricting children to have family time with their parents and/or siblings. This will affect their relationships badly in the future. They lack the ability to have social and cultural connections with other people or friends in their family and in their community which will later affect their developmental aspects and social understanding of family and values later in life.

Assertion: Homework is a barrier to extra-curricular activities

Reasoning:

Having too much homework can leave poor children so stressed and time consuming that they cannot relax and do fun-filled extra-curricular activities like swimming, playing games, dancing, art, music and athletic activities. Without these activities they will not learn how to be unique and different because these types of activities excel in teaching the child how to stand out, and how to think out of the box. If they don’t learn how to be special, and how to think abstract, then we will get less unique people in the future. This will definitely affect the future citizens of the world and the way we live.

Hello. My name is Aleena and I believe that homework should not be banned.

Assertion 1-Homework is an important and valuable component of learning.

Reasoning 1- It teaches the students important life skills that they will need to apply even when they become working adults, especially time management, prioritizing work, as well as values, namely responsibility and self-discipline.

Reasoning 2-Setting homework and assignments extends the student’s study beyond what they learn in school and allows for a wider and deeper understanding of the topic.

Reasoning 3-With homework, school hours are also put to good use in which teachers can spend their time teaching well instead of giving the students class work to do.

Evidence 1-According to Cooper’s much-cited review of homework studies, there have been 20 studies since 1962 that compared the achievement of students who received homework and achievement of students who did not. Results are that 14 of the studies showed benefit in doing homework.

Evidence 2-According to a 2006 study by Harris Cooper, director of Duke University’s Program in Education, which analyzed and combined the results of dozens of homework studies. The studies found that students who had homework performed better on class tests compared to those who did not.

Assertion 2-Homework helps kids do well in exams

Reasoning 1-They get extra practice to understand the concepts

Reasoning 2: Looking at the homework, Teachers can plan lessons according to the students’ abilities

Reasoning 3: They don't waste time on other things and are focussed on completing their work

Evidence1: A 2011 study in the Journal of Advanced Academics found that it was the sense of efficiency students felt while completing homework assignments, and the availability of resources (such as a quiet place to work and access to a computer) that led to increased mathematics achievement on an international exam.

Evidence 2: According to a parent guide released by the National PTA and the National Education Association, most educators agree that adequate amount of homework is helpful

Source:http://www.debate.org/debates/Homework-Should-be-banned/19/

Assertion 3: Connects parents and school curriculum

Reasoning 1: Parents are often eager to support their children’s learning but do not always know how to help, homework helps them to connect

Reasoning 2: homework is helpful for parents to discuss the child's progress with the teacher, during an orientation or a parent teacher conference

Reasoning 3: Teachers will talk with parents about their mutual goals for their children’s learning

Evidence 1: Parental involvement in children’s homework (Hoover- Dempsey et al., 2001) is discussed in this paper

Evidence 2: Importance of Parenting involvement in homework By Epstein & Van Voorhis, 2001; Hoover-Dempsey, Bassler, & Burow, 1995

#1: Parents can see the quality of the curriculum

Parents often become involved in their children's education through homework. They wanted to know what their children are learning in their classrooms. Though there are parent teacher meetings, it only gives a glimpse of their child’s quality of education. Homework on the other hand helps parents in detail what the teachers are teaching their children and how much children understood the topic. It can be a powerful tool for letting parents know what the child is learning.

According to hfrp.org, Hoover-Dempsey’s research in 2001 on parental involvement in children's homework, the research supported that parents choose to become involved in homework because they believe they should be involved, they believed their involvement will make a positive difference in their children's learning.

#2: Homework triggers stronger bonds between parents and kids

If parents are not in the classroom, how will they help their kids understand and learn the concepts? The only way to do this is through homework. Homework gives children and parents a reason to talk about what's going on at school. The parents will feel like wasting their money if they don’t even know what the kids are learning. Homework also creates bonds with parents when they ask them for help.

According to apecsec.org, Homework can trigger bonding between parents and kids when they ask parents for help. Students think it is fun to do homework with parents. Without homework, these bonds may involve technology rather than personal interactions.

#3: Homework is revision

If the students don’t get homework after school, they will most likely forget what they have learnt that day. Homework, helps them to review and revise what they have learnt and help them to reinforce what they have learnt that day at school. Also, it will help students realize if they have really understood the subject or not. Study shows that if things are recalled from memory quite often, they have a tendency to stay longer in the memory. This will help students stress less during the exams. Homework in appropriate amounts is a good thing and it helps build a good foundation.

#4: Homework help kids learn and explore more

Apart from helping students reinforce what they have learnt at school that day, it also lets students explore and learn more by doing research on internet or library to aid them at their homework. Through this, students can gain additional knowledge on the subject they are researching which cannot be done at school hours. This helps them gain extra knowledge and also helps them develop this habit of exploring and researching which helps them in future. Why should homework be banned if it helps them succeed in current and future.

If you just learned a hard lesson at school, and you really want to practice, but you don't have homework, how are you gonna practice? You could go onto online websites, but don't you think it's better to practice something that the teacher gives you to practice? The question that your teacher makes on your homework may sometimes be on your test. We do spend hours at school learning and practicing, then we have homework where we have to practice more, but you can never learn to much. Am I right?

Something students never do....READ THEIR TEXTBOOKS ON THEIR ON TIME. Like seriously...the only reason homework seems necessary is because students are just much too reluctant to read their friggen text book.

Honestly, teachers are useless, because they are only just overseers that are there to make sure students are learning the material.

I think homework should not be banned.... Coz nowadays students are not paying much attention towards study. But if atleast some work is given to them they will try to perform it. It will help them in their weaker subjects. When a work is assigned to them , they however try to do it and understand something from it. Atleast by the fear of their teachers they will study. So from my point of view i think homeworks should not be banned as they help students . Even some people think that it is a waste of time but they r absolutely wrong. Practice makes a man perfect..... This even applies to the student. So if the student has the habit of writing and doing homework it is gonna help them.....

School without homework would be unimaginable for me. As a student, homework is very important to me, and I enjoy the process of doing my homework and taking good use of my time. There are many reasons homework should not be abolished as it is beneficial towards the student. Firstly it allows the teacher to acknowledge the student's weaknesses and providing them an opportunity to improve and acquire new skills. Also, taking time to do homework is a chance for students to catch up on missed class and further reinforces the day's lessons so students can absorb new knowledge more firmly in their minds.

Pam Sammons, a professor of education at Oxford University stated:"What we're not saying is that everyone should do large amounts, but if we could shift some of those who spend no time or half an hour into [doing] one to two hours – one of the reasons private schools' results are better is that there's more expectation of homework."

Several studies have proven that homework, in fact, does improve the stability of the student in schooltime Timing spent completing homework, thus is a time well spent. Rather than giving students another hour of leisure time, doing homework entitles the student to an hour of enriched education; this can greatly benefit the student.

Hello. My name is Demi Osinubi and I believe that homework should not be banned. First I would like to assert my three main points.

1. By doing homework, children will start to develop time management.

2. It improves children’s thinking and memory.

3. homework teaches kids to be responsible.

R: They will start to allocate their time for leisure pursuits and completing their homework. Through this, the students will be able to learn the value of self-discipline as they try to refrain themselves from playing until they have completed their assignments.

E: 60% percent of parents that have kids that get a lot of homework say that their child's time management skills have improved.

R: Kids have to remember what they learned in school to do their homework.

E: A survey from the Washington Post showed that most homework that is assigned in class is went over before going home so thwe kids can leave with an understanding of the topic.

R: If a child forgets a homework assignment, the teacher may make the person do it during gym or recess. This means that the child is less likley to forget homework because they don,'t want to miss their recess.

E: 70% of students that got homework grew up to be more responsinle and less forgetful.

Opposition:

Assertion: Homework is a very good way for parents to know what their children are learning at school

Reasoning:

When a child gets homework, it has a set of problems for you to solve. When you see a young child doing his/her homework, you can see what they are working on, and when there is a test, you can study with them through past homework. This system works very well, but if we ban homework, then this system will not work and the parents will not know what their child is working on, and will not study with them efficiently.

Assertion: Homework creates a bond between parent and student (rebuttal for prop #2)

Reasoning: When students ask for help from their parents, they are sharing and engaging task between the parent and the student. This is called “Team work”. Team work is a very good way to build bonds with child as the child learns to understand you. This is a form of family time in which learning can take place in both the parent and the student. This sort of family time is very important because children and parents learn to understand each other.

Assertion: Homework nourishes school learning concepts (rebuttal for prop #3)

Reasoning: Homework usually includes already “introduced” concepts in school and also concepts learning during “special” classes like gym, strength and conditioning, music, art and world languages. These classes help the child bring out his/her creativity and instills self-confidence and ability to learn new things with ease. The concepts that are learnt when doing a variety of difficult problems, not only reinforces the concept but also makes the student solve any kind of problem with ease.
