How did 'life' start?

Many viewpoints try to explain how life began (life being living things), but are they correct? Are religious explanations more logical than secular ones? How did life begin?

Random chance. (Cue Christian attacks and creationism bullshit)

I genuinely BELIEVE (not the word choice) that life was an "accident." The whole concept of evolution is an never-ending series of "accidents." There is no reason to believe, given the right conditions, that the building blocks of life could not have formed. RNA nucleotides have been naturally synthesized.

Sure, there are questions even scientists can't answer (yet), hence my use of the word "believe." But to assert that because science has not yet figured out what happened, it was god, is absolutely absurd. And I am a theist, mind you.

The problem from a scientific perspective is more "which way" did life begin, as theoretically there are a few ways conceivably given the make-up of the earth around 4 billion years ago, this could have happened. There are experiments that can recreate amino acids for example, the building blocks of DNA, from the lifeless elements this beginning world contained in abundance..

As always though science is hampered compared to religion in that science requires proof. That it could have happened half a million ways in no way deters a theist from insisting it happened magically.

I'm sure the definite answer will be known within a decade or so, but here are a couple interesting articles I found discussing this very question:

As an atheist, this is one thing I openly admit that science cannot answer. We do not know everything, and due to the complexity of the world, I do not think we ever shall. However, the gaps in science where God is needed to answer a question have only ever got smaller, and I believe that one day, science will have an answer.

Due to the lack of any proof on this subject, it's hardly a good question, simply a debate of 'Who can say their religions right the most'! I expected better, hiohoihohi ;)

science cannot answer science will have an answer

you feeling alright Benster?

hardly a good question

if there was concrete proof to every debate there would be no point in debating, the point of debating is to expand ideas and test ones own thoughts against others.

that's President Hiohoihohi to you ;)

Science cannot answer it currently. It's long been a theists argument that just because science can't currently answer something, it means that God must have done it. I would guess that most scientific discoveries renounce a theists claim of God's doing.

No, you need some proof, but you want different interpretations. With no proof, there's just wild opinions. With complete proof, there is (should be) no debate.

I think life started by God creating man from dust. It says in the Bible that God made man from the dust of this earth. He also made the partner when Adam was asleep God took one of the his ribs out and then when he woke us there was Adam's partner Eve.

Where are the proofs of your claims? And, before you start quoting the Bible again, there are a few things you should need to take note of. First, you need to prove the existence of God. Second, without establishing proof beyond reasonable doubt of the existence of God, you cannot quote the Bible because it would be arguing in a circle.

If I prove the existence of God I would have a ton of resources that claim that God does exist. But I am not going to argue over the existence of God because I have tried to proove my point to many people and what ever I say to people all they do is shoove all what I say about God down the drain. I say to myself I am basically agruing with fools who don't get it and my words were a waste.

This claim is dogmatism. It suggests no reason for its conclusion. The views of others, that the Bible is not God's word or is not an ultimate authority, have just as much validity

God isn't an acceptable answer for everything,

scientists created the big bang theory to explain how this universe was 'scientifically created'. and from the big bang, the world was formed, and life started from the sea. did you ever watch NGC? or BBC? there is an explanation how life started.

and if someone says god as an answer, can you explain the presence of homo sapience thousands years ago? god hadn't even existed in 1 B.C., how could he possibly create dinosaurs?

As much as the religious and the anti-religious want for you to believe that they are in possession of some (unfortunately) occult knowledge, naught ought to be trusted. Life began long ago, far longer than surely anybody can truly imagine. I find it hard to wrap my head around the concept of a millennium, simply because I've yet to experience even 5% of one, and yet there are those who think they know what happened not just several millennia ago, but many mille milleniem ago. Perhaps somebody's theory is right, but there is no way we can no for certain what was the true cause.

God created the earth and all the life in it. His Holy Book, the Bible, contains all the information you need to know. The first chapter, in fact.

Since no one witnessed how the world was created, the only proper answer would be, "I don't know."

Honestly if you don't know the answer to that you need to read you bible just the first five pages and you should know the answer to that question. Sad.

You're new to the site, so you get a free pass, but there's never been a single argument that's ever been won with the simple answer of 'it's true because the Bible/Torah/Quran says so'. It just gets people disputing you and telling you you're wrong.

We're not against religion, many people on the site are religious and I don't think many people have a problem with that, but as a community, we are against simplistic reasoning, and for critical thinking. The bible is not considered a reputable source, due to a number of inconsistencies and its questionable history, to name but two.
