I just got letters from 6 colleges. Are any of them any good?
I have only heard of one of the colleges, but I know it only by name and nothing more. Does anyone have any info they can give me?
I was sent letters from the following colleges:
Emory/Oxford University (The **only** one I have heard of before)
Washington and Lee University
Loyola College
Notre Dame
Columbia
and
Swarthmore College

I'm pretty sure biophysics is a masters level course of study. As for the colleges, I have to agree with david down below. The department is the most important factor as far as academia. As for the business degree, poo on that- it's a joke. Do something that will engage your mind. I can teach you business in 2 months time, the rest you'll have to actually experience. Science is the future. Biophysics is an awesome field and continually growing. Remember that undergrad is just going to give you an overall picture. Grad level will narrow you down further and Phd/Doctorate will make you an expert in a specific field. Sit back and enjoy the ride. I actually almost went to Washington and Lee. It's a very small school on a beautiful campus in rural Virginia. It's in the same town as Virginia Military Institute (VMI), so there's a decent military presence. It's a great school academically, a great setting, close enough to Richmond and Washington DC if you want a bigger city environment (about 2-3 hours drive). However, it all depends on what you're looking for. It's steeped in tradition and I would definitely consider it a "southern school". The school is very small (~1700 students) and very expensive (as it's a private school). So, depending on what you're looking for it may be a good fit. Side: Washington and Lee
Notre Dame and Columbia are some pretty respectable schools. why are you getting there letters already anyways? you shouldn't be since your profile says youre only 16...unless it's the junk kind of letter like "you're academic acheivements have got you noticed" or that "you should really consider our school" crap. otherwise everyone gets those so it's just a reason for their school to get noticed via the college board. Side: Washington and Lee
Were they unsolicited? First step is to find out what you want to do, which you have. Now look up rankings in the area you want to go to school. It doesn't matter the schools overall reputation, just it's reputation in that department, as you will be working with/for people who are aware of good schools in your specific course of study. Many schools send unsolicited letters of interest to good students. And that's great and flattering and all, but don't let it influence your decision. Side: whoa hold on a sec

Notre Dame is one of the top acedemic colleges in the country. Notre Dame's acedemic prestige dwells far above its Athletic prestige. The reason why it has a good sports program is because of Knute Rockne. He was and still is the most winningest coach in College Football (with a winnig percentage of about 88%). He went to Notre Dame as a student and not as football player. Before he was a football coach he was a chemist. You should try to apply and see if you get in. Side: Notre Dame

You're looking at some pretty respectable schools there Adam, Ivy League included! I know what you wish to do but anything to do with bio-physics will require a masters so be sure and set your cap for the long haul and look at their ranks and ratings before you decide. There is not a bad apple in that bunch but name isn't always everything. If you hadn't applied but simply got these from PSAT results...apply to where you wish to go and I'd bet you'd have an easy ticket to entry. By the way, and I may be mistaken but, is Swarthmore a school for ladies only? Side: ALL OF THEM
