I just got letters from 6 colleges. Are any of them any good?

I have only heard of one of the colleges, but I know it only by name and nothing more. Does anyone have any info they can give me?

I was sent letters from the following colleges:

Emory/Oxford University (The **only** one I have heard of before)

Washington and Lee University

Loyola College

Notre Dame

Columbia

and

Swarthmore College

What the heck do you want to do?! That's the first thing you should disclose.

Biophysics is my main choice then my others:

Biology

Physics (Not sure which branch of Physics quite yet)

Business

you should try looking at UC schools. they have some of the best science majoring programs. Also check harvard (not law though. duhh).

I'm pretty sure biophysics is a masters level course of study. As for the colleges, I have to agree with david down below. The department is the most important factor as far as academia. As for the business degree, poo on that- it's a joke. Do something that will engage your mind. I can teach you business in 2 months time, the rest you'll have to actually experience. Science is the future. Biophysics is an awesome field and continually growing. Remember that undergrad is just going to give you an overall picture. Grad level will narrow you down further and Phd/Doctorate will make you an expert in a specific field. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

I actually almost went to Washington and Lee. It's a very small school on a beautiful campus in rural Virginia. It's in the same town as Virginia Military Institute (VMI), so there's a decent military presence. It's a great school academically, a great setting, close enough to Richmond and Washington DC if you want a bigger city environment (about 2-3 hours drive). However, it all depends on what you're looking for. It's steeped in tradition and I would definitely consider it a "southern school".

The school is very small (~1700 students) and very expensive (as it's a private school). So, depending on what you're looking for it may be a good fit.

Notre Dame and Columbia are some pretty respectable schools.

why are you getting there letters already anyways? you shouldn't be since your profile says youre only 16...unless it's the junk kind of letter like "you're academic acheivements have got you noticed" or that "you should really consider our school" crap. otherwise everyone gets those so it's just a reason for their school to get noticed via the college board.

I applied to Loyola. It's a chill school. Situated in Baltimore, MD. It's one of my safeties though.

Were they unsolicited?

First step is to find out what you want to do, which you have. Now look up rankings in the area you want to go to school. It doesn't matter the schools overall reputation, just it's reputation in that department, as you will be working with/for people who are aware of good schools in your specific course of study.

Many schools send unsolicited letters of interest to good students. And that's great and flattering and all, but don't let it influence your decision.

Side: whoa hold on a sec

I don't really think that this is a good question for CreateDebate. Where you go to college has a huge effect on your life, and it's your decision to make. Also, biophysics? Right on :P

I think Loyola College is a black school. I mean, it sounds black. But what do I know ;)

It isn't an all black school as far as their letter stated, but then again, I did put "African American Descent" down for my ethnicity when I took the PSAT.

Side: i am not black

Are you kidding me? You actually put down "African American Descent" lol

You're not black! lol

What is you going to say when they sees you; "Whazup Homies?" lol

Loyola is a Catholic school named for Ignatius Loyola, the man that founded the Society of Jesus also known as the Jesuits.

Well, sh!t! Now I have egg on my face. Thanks. I didn't know that. I guess you learn something new everyday, even if you don't Google it ;)

Notre Dame has a very good division 1 basketball and football team. For academics it is not their strong point. They are a sports college! They have a nice chill campus though.

Notre Dame is one of the top acedemic colleges in the country. Notre Dame's acedemic prestige dwells far above its Athletic prestige. The reason why it has a good sports program is because of Knute Rockne. He was and still is the most winningest coach in College Football (with a winnig percentage of about 88%). He went to Notre Dame as a student and not as football player. Before he was a football coach he was a chemist. You should try to apply and see if you get in.

The Two best in there are probably Notre Dame, Emory, and Columbia. If you want the best education, go with Columbia.

Side: Columbia

You're looking at some pretty respectable schools there Adam, Ivy League included! I know what you wish to do but anything to do with bio-physics will require a masters so be sure and set your cap for the long haul and look at their ranks and ratings before you decide. There is not a bad apple in that bunch but name isn't always everything. If you hadn't applied but simply got these from PSAT results...apply to where you wish to go and I'd bet you'd have an easy ticket to entry. By the way, and I may be mistaken but, is Swarthmore a school for ladies only?

Notre Dame is the best college. Definately should go there. Good sports program/very good academics.
