I've talked to young people who ask what's wrong with making others pay for their College.

There is obviously a difference between going to very expensive higher education versus every child learning how to read and write. To get most jobs in society, one must learn to read and write and do minor math. If Government did not FORCE everyone to go to school through 12th grade, I would be ok with home schooling. Since Gvernment DOES FORCE every child to go to school or be homed school, then there has to be some pubic schools. I realize some kids have no parents and need public schools to learn to read and write. Every child does NOT need College. It would be nice if Government finally realized how expensive College is because of all the required courses that have nothing to do with the career path. I would love to see many more vocational schools that teach only what's required to do a particular job, and in that way reduce the costs. Businesses would not have to require degrees before hiring people if we got away from this degree mentality. Most jobs don't need a degree, they need hard working people capable of learning on the job. The savings would also be to the employers who do not have to pay higher salaries required to pay back all the College costs. 1

https://cew.georgetown.edu/wp-content/ By 2020, about 65% of jobs require secondary schooling beyond high school. If you your reason for providing public schooling through high school is that it is necessary to get most jobs in society, that logic should extend to public universities. No one is saying that all college must be free, only that there should be a free option, as the workforce has developed in a way our education system has not. |
