Is Google Making Us Stupid?

Please post your best argument for the side you were assigned. You must demonstrate a blend of ethos, pathos, and logos. Remember, you do not have a strong case if you just use ethos (showing your credibility) or pathos (igniting strong feelings in others). Logos is the foundation for all effective arguments. (So, use these types of effective evidence to build your logos: facts, expert opinions, statistics, examples, and anecdotes.)

not everything online is true. Anyone can post something online.

Side: Yes, Google is.

Google is making us believe things that are not true. The average person may never know if its true or not. The people could make us think what their saying is true. The people who may be using Google to post stuff are masked behind a screen and no one may know who they are. They could be uncredible people posting things that are not true. So you can not trust things on the internet no matter how real they seem.

I believe that Google is making us stupid, because it breaks our train of thought when we go to search a topic. Google also gives you millions of different things that sometimes aren't even about the topic that we've searched which this causes us to again lose our train of thought about what our actual topic is.

Google is making us stupid because google is a distraction by all the ads. Also, anyone can put anything on the internet even if it's not true. Source: http://www.loyno.edu/

I have never thought of it that way. I awlays thought that the internet was a good source because we have the answer right in front of us. I haven't thought of it distarcting ads either. I am starting to think differently about Google.

~"it use to take hours to find information on topics one is researching on, but now it’s in front of you in the blink of an eye".

"~ Sitting in libraries looking through stacks and stacks of books is what one use to do before Google was around to give us answers".

~"Now with the Internet, one doesn’t have to sit around reading page after page".

~"By simple clicking of keys onto Google’s search engine, you can find what you’re looking for in a matter of seconds".

~Google takes away from the learning of other subjects and allows an individual to get use to fast things.

~ Google is making us stupid because we know we don’t have to try so hard to find information.

~Having this information come to us so quickly, we are getting use to not reading things entirely when necessary.

~ When it comes to reading books I tend to have a short attention span; whatever may be around distracts me.

~Some people today don’t even feel the need to read books entirely but rather go on Spark Notes and get their information there.

~This article is telling us this and makes one think.

~The web has become a huge factor in many people’s personal and professional lives.

Yes Google is making us stupid. I know this because there are a bunch of ads acting as distractions slowing you down. Also you can Google to find all the facts you want, but you can't Google your way to success in the world(Nicolas Carr). One more reason Google is making us stupid we use electronics all the time when we could just turn them off and just stop and think.

Google might be making us stupid because there are distractions and ads on Google which is distracts us and makes us remember less, understand less, and learn less. The faster we skim through websites, the odds we are that you will run into more ads. By trying to find lots of information faster doesn't make up our intelligence.

IzzyC: Yes, it is making us stupid. It is, because it doesn't require as much brainpower, and we don't have to think as much. Just a few taps on the keyboard, and bam! Information. We don't have to use our brains to process whether it is relevant information, or even if it is not believable or credible. We don't have to remember anything, and we don't even have to write down anything. Just look it up again, and then there it is. Or we can look it up in the history of our searches. We don't have to review anything. We're not even learning anything! Our generations are becoming even stupider while we look up more and more! When we are looking up things on Google, we barely have to type anything. It will just pop up right away. It would be better if we all would just type it out ourselves without typing one word on the keyboard.

I read most of the perceptions that were posted. You guys have a different outlook to determine your conclusion. There is something called the deep web, which is the full access to surf the web. We are only granted to 3% access. Meaning, the information and knowledgeable answers we gain are from people. What I'm getting at is that the information provided could plausibly be a manipulated lie to control introspective perception. I think true brilliance comes from free thinking, without the interruption of 3rd person opinion. Most view google as an all knowing omnipotent guru. Its not about whether we are becoming lazy, or quick witted. The question is; "who is making the web operational, and is there a way to find out absolute truth of society?" so yes I believe google manipulates and deludes one's perception.

To a point, yes Google is making us stupid. Though I'd argue that the terminology would be less-informed.

Seeing as google is mainly controlled by a select power which is more politically/ideologically organized, they can influence the effects of discourse for better, or worse. Either because it can control the course of the discussion, or completely eliminate certain voices from that same conversation all together.

Google is not making us stupid because it gives us the answers right away. If we need to know something we look it up and it gives it to us and we know the answer. It doesn't give us the wrong answer and that would make us stupid, but it gives us the right answer so it makes us smarter. People use google to find creative ways of what they are looking for. It helps us memorize the basic facts. Facts say that it makes us smarter than ever.

QuickMatches allow the GSA administrator to define certain sites that should appear at the top of the search results list when a particular keyword or phrase is searched on. For example, if a user searched for “transcripts”, the GSA could recognize that as a QuickMatch and display Enrollment Services’ transcript information page at the top of the search results list. Google.com displays these QuickMatches as “sponsored links” within its search results page. - http://www4.uwm.edu/search/info/features.cfm

Is Google making us stupid, I guess it would depend on the way you think the definition of stupid is. By reading an article online I would not consider that stupid in my opinion. 81 percent of experts polled by the Pew Internet Research Project say the opportunities outweigh the distractions. Writing has improved our law, science, arts, culture, and our memory. Google has made us smarter both individually and collectively.

Not everything is true online. With the research that I found shows that Google is making us stupid. Everybody thinks that all the things on the internet are distractions for people. What I learned is that Google is making us smarter because we have ready and free access to information. Like the car makes us go faster the internet lets us think better and faster. The information is considered a wide range of information.

What if that information was a form of manipulation? Reading something doesn't make it true. I'll put it in analogy of what google plausibly is.

lets say I create a program ran through a Bluetooth headset. On this headset I allow people to ask questions, and my information is automated response to voice recognition. Lets say you ask me whether or not god is real. Then I present the automated responses. If my intent is to dissuade the populace I would lie and let them here what pleases them. Which is the same concept of google. People find the Mayan calendar to be bullshit, yet we listen to the all knowing google. People ask for the future weather, climate and more. I think Mayans tried predicting and answering questions through and omnipotent power too. We treat google as a god, our tribute to this god is money for the internet, making us unaware, and them more powerful.

Google is not making us dumber, it's the content Google lets us access that numbs our minds. But, there are probably equal truths as there are lies, and a vast amount of content, such as reviews, videos and debates are based on opinion. Even opinions make us smarter in a way, as it informs us what other people think about something.

Side: No, Google is not.
1 point

Stupid is the wrong word, it should say ignorant and lazy. People aren't becoming less intelligent because of a search engine, that would be crazy, they're becoming less knowledgeable because they no longer need to seek out information they need in books or lectures. More likely, it isn't even making society as a whole lazier or more ignorant and it's only making the people who would be lazy and ignorant anyway even lazier and more ignorant because they don't even fact check anymore (even though google makes fact checking easier than ever).

Side: No, Google is not.

No, if anything it's making us smarter. How can an information source make us more stupid? If you take into consideration that some of the information on the internet is fake, then yes - that is a valid argument, but most of it is legit enough.

Side: No, Google is not.

While we have to acknowledge that Google is making it easier to "fall into a rabbithole" of opinions similar to yours, which may or may not be correct, it must also be noted that it offers an unmatched opportunity to inform yourself with substantive information.

Because of this fact, i believe that Google is not making us stupid, at least not those of us who know how to use it responsibly.

Side: No, Google is not.

I agree, but what it is doing is making it easier for stupid people to convince themselves they aren't stupid -- and often convince others also.

I've had many an argument with self-declared internet scientists, engineers and philosophers over the years, who are perfectly capable of cut and pasting text, but not so capable when it comes to figuring out why, as scientists, they spend 95 percent of their time arguing about nothing on the internet!!

Google has enabled some of the bigger idiots and sophists in life to argue about things they don't understand. Also, in addition to providing the world with a treasure trove of accurate information, it has also made it much easier to access misinformation. Particularly of the political variety.
