In my opinion social media is great for staying in contact with friends, families and long time associates from school or university.

I think it's pretty good so long as some people research before they go into a self-righteous tizzy over certain posts.

It's a great way to keep in touch with others and one of the easiest ways to keep friends and family updates as a bundle as opposed to having to call each and every one.

When the pros and cons are added up I feel that there are more negatives than positives.

Social media in all it's forms stifles face to face interaction between people in real life situations and has created a culture of cyber bullying which many find deeply hurtful and disturbing.

Social media sites permits people to live in a surreal world in which they can present themselves as totally different characters than they really are.

This weakness is exploited by paedophiles, sexual predators and fraudsters.

When meeting people for the first time at a social gathering all parties have the opportunity to judge each other and what they're saying, or claiming, in conjunction with being able to observe, and be aware of their age, their appearance and body language.

Social media retards the development of social skills in young people who, in many cases feel awkward and socially backward when they find themselves away from their computers and in a group of real people with whom they have to mingle and express their opinions on a face to face basis.

This condition can be observed in people with poor and/or underdeveloped social abilities clutching to their mobile phones as a drowning person would a lifeline, and having ''cyber conversations'' with, either a real or imaginary person on their cell phone.

Sure, social media has it's good points, but everything considered we'd be better off without this scourge of our times.

I agree with Antrim on some points. There is definitely are dark side to social media which needs to be controlled somehow. However young children are more informed at an early age as nowadays the police go into schools and explain the dangers.

What I don't like is the fact that teenagers are hiding behind social media and agree with Antrim that it retards the development of social skills. There is definitely less face to face interaction between children than before. Only the other day I had to speak to a 20 year old about something and after 30 secs he said "I'll send you a whatsapp". I told him I didn't have "whataspp" and preferred to continue speaking about the subject face to face. You could see he felt extremely uncomfortable about having to interact in person and tried to shy away. QUITE SAD!! No better way to communicate than by speaking in person!!
