It's not necessarily a moral way of handling things, but it can be effective when dealing with terrorists and criminals. When placed in a situation where innocent lives are at stake, I can imagine black mail being a smart alternative when dealing with people. I personally would consider it in this scenario. Then there is the really dirty blackmail that we hear about coming from politics, businesses, law firms, etc,. The kind used to shut somebody up. However, I'm sure it is effective in many cases. Side: Yes, it is effective

I see people saying "no, blackmail is bad" e.t.c. This isn't about whether it's good or not, the point is blackmail is exceedingly effective! How do you think Al Capone managed. How do you think politicians manage, all the other crooks and gangsters! Yes blackmail is very effective. Side: Yes, it is effective

It depends on whom you are blackmailing. Humans vary in degrees on value upon things around them and upon themselves. What you may assume to be important to someone may be completely insignificant to them. If we are to assume that you are intelligent and have picked up all the loose ends of your blackmail attempt... then yes, it's very effective. It can able be morally justifiable, but this debate doesn't seem to be about morals, and moreover, the effectiveness of blackmail (even though I could argue that immoral things are ineffective, I won't derail the topic that is supposed to be debated). Side: Yes, it is effective
Blackmail is effective because it works, just like manipulation. However they are both wrong forms of getting what you want, because it's dishonest and wicked to do. Why not get what you want by working hard, and if you can't obtain it then it's not for you to have. If you have to blackmail somebody for something, then you don't deserve what you want. Side: Yes, it is effective

But there is always the possibility it isn't they only bargaining chip. They can have more on you, or someone else who saw what happened to you. By showing that they are serious about their threat, they become more immtemidating. Sure you can always say no to them, but the result boosts the the credibilty of their threats for their future endevior, so it is a win win for them. Side: Yes, it is effective
