Merriam Webster has two relevant definitions for "Sport": 1. a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other. In this sense, Cheer leading is a sport when done in competitions, which I don't think anyone really disagrees with considering some of the incredible things they do. And 2. a physical activity (such as hunting, fishing, running, swimming, etc.) that is done for enjoyment. In this sense it is obviously a sport, but so are many things. In the end, I'd say that competitive cheer leading is definitely a sport, but I have difficulty calling side-line cheer leading a sport. Side: yes

I think that cheerleading is a sport because it is basically competitive exercise which basically all other sports are. On the other hand, I wouldn't consider it a sport if there is no competitiveness at all, but most of the time, cheerleaders are doing their routines up against each other. Here, I conclude that cheerleading is a sport. Side: yes

Yes cheer-leading is a sport because you compete and go to places for tournaments. Take any other sport; for example, volleyball is competitive and you have to go places for away games, but once you have a certain amount of winnings, you go into a tournament and play for a placing. Side: yes

I think competition cheerleading is a sport, like doing stunts at meets and such (where you aren't actually cheering on the main team.) But the average high school cheerleading is not a sport because it is their job to cheer on the actual team. I know some may argue that it has qualities like a sport, say, you can get hurt in cheer, you can also get hurt walking down the stairs, but that's not a sport. Side: no
