Is compulsory psychiatric treatment a violation of fundamental human rights?

Many states have laws that allow a person with a diagnosed mental illness to be subjected to forced medication if certain conditions are met, for example episodes of violence severe enough to pose a danger to themselves or others.
However, this practice is questionable in regards to human rights. As a reference I suggest using the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which has been ratified by most states, although not accepted as legally binding.

Those around a psychotic and dangerous individual have rights also. The right to protection from psychotic individuals .... especially those with arms, (not the left and right kind). A balance must be kept, and in favor of those who are NOT a danger to themselves or other entities.

It's no different with a dangerous country. We have to protect the innocent ... the normal.

If they are subject to forced medication I would imagine they would be in a position or place (such as a hospital or mental facility) that such actions could be monitored. If the person in question was prone to fits of violence then forcing them to take medication is not only to the benefit of the person but to the benefit and safety of the staff and other patients. SO LONG as it is done to help the person and not to simply make life for the care takers easier by putting them in a near catatonic state or temporarily disabling them to "get them out of their hair", then I don't see a problem with it.

I think it would be better to force them to take the meds... For example, what do you do with a rabid animal? Do you kill it? Or do you help it and train it? The obvious choice is to help the human right? Not kill it.
