YES. Illegally downloading music is the equivalent of taking a CD from a shop without paying for it - you are stealing from the artist and label.

The line is not as clear-cut when dealing with the internet. On the web, music is commonly available to be listened to for free. There is no physical content to be seized, so this comparison makes little sense.

The point that we are arguing is with ILLEGAL downloading - without the permission of the creator. If an artist puts up their song for free, then it is not illegal, hence not related to this argument. It seems that YOUR comparison makes little sense!

it is illegal on the basis that the recording is owned by the artist/record label/publisher. using/taking something that somebody else owns without permission is illegal... so... yeah

when the government has hands in our pockets and takes our money but calling it by a legal name like "taxes", is that stealing?

One of the main aims for artists when they make music is to reach as many people as they can. By downloading their music, it is helping the artists achieve their goals.

if it is put on the internet with out copy right then it is totally no stealing

All music is copyrighted! As intellectual property from the second it's written or recorded. Plus all released music falls under copyright law automatically.

No, it is not stealing. The primary goal of an artist is to express themselves. Because this expression is given freely, it becomes something that is impossible to steal.

The primary goal of artists will differ from person to person - some artists work as musicians and rely on income from their art to support themselves.

Expression itself is intangible, hence "impossible to steal", but the actual product that you download (the music/song) is a physical recording and someone's property - taking it without paying for it what the creator requests is STEALING.

Stealing someone's wallet is stealing, full stop. It doesn't become 'not stealing' if they don't know who did it. Now they can't buy dinner for their family and its your fault.

i cant read your gibberish so im not sure which side i posted on. and i dont care since it seems like your an idiot. ha! so anyway i know firsthand the answer to this question. I was in a professional band for three years (my username) and i can say we pro musicians all HATE those free d-load services on the net. they ARE ripping off musicians. its hard enuff in that biz to make money and places like Napster and Spotify made it worse. we figured we lost about half the money we should have made from CD sales do to those so called file sharing websites. file sharing! ha! what a joke..should be called "sharing the job of killing the starving musicians!
