Is it more important to communicate or to speak?

What's the point of speaking or signing or whatever if you are not understood? Words are just one of many ways we can communicate. If we didn't worry about nuances, we wouldn't need things like emoticons, right? ;)

It is far more important to communicate than to speak. Finding understanding by way of communication is the lynch pin of all beneficial progress by humanity.

If or when there is no interest in being understood, or when the only interest is finding agreement or neutralizing different perspectives, opinions, or beliefs, communication and all benefit that rises from it is stymied.

In that case, why do you spend so long saying so little? And there's no verb governing your second sentence, so it fails to communicate any meaning.

(and yes, I imagine you will accuse me of ad hominem. lol.)

Side: I like knowing I am heard.

Speaking, at its best, is just a form of communication, so anyone who values the latter values the former. Therefore I will have to say it is more important to communicate. Speaking isn't exclusively communicative either. It can in fact be quite vulgar, meaningless, ugly, unintelligible, and so on.

Shout something loud and long enough and people will start to believe you.

Side: I like knowing I am heard.

The gulf between some people is so large that communication is impossible. For example, do you really think you can have a reasonable conversation with a jihadist? I mean, do you think he can make you understand his point of view? Do you think you can make him understand yours? My assumption, of course, is that the reader is not a jihadist or jihadist sympathizer sob.
