Is saying someone is weak or immoral a weak or strong argument?

There's lots of judgment being passed on this site against other participants or against society.  How strong is that type of argument?

1) It's a personal attack. As opposed to a statistic, or logic, or an assessment of the actual argument they made.

2) Since it usually replaces responding to their actual argument it is the laziest response which could be made requiring no thought or effort from the responder besides issuing the insult.

3) Most morality attacks originate from religion or political orientation, which means the accuser is leaning on someone else's work (God or the church, or a political talking head) instead of making their own argument from their own thoughts.

4) Typically morality arguments are only agreed with by people who already share your morals (meaning other religious, or other conservatives) and are utterly rejected by those who don't share that with you. Which ultimately means you persuade no one with that accusation.

5) A majority of morality objections on this site appear to end with the person considering themselves the most moral simply banning those who disagree. Walking away from the argument in and of itself proves it's a weak form of argument.

As a form of argument, observations as to personal character are exceptionally weak. It is not always the case, though, that such observations are meant as arguments. Ad hominem is also rarely about persuading anyone, and is ultimately about the gratification of whomever is advancing the ad hominem. Finally, a lack of originality does not make an argument weak unless the argument itself in its original form is weak. I do agree though that many people, both on this form and elsewhere, are not very interested in the actual conversation. I find it is best to not take those sort very seriously.

I think you're absolutely right on all those points. I do have a couple questions though. First, you are only referring to arguments where were only talking about what the person said and not the person them self? Second, in your third point you mentioned how people who make morality arguments are just leaning on someone else's work instead of coming from their own thoughts. Are you talking about borrowing someone else's opinion when you are mentioning this?

Side: Weak

Ad hominem attacks are the last bastion of the mentally vanquished. Name calling, which is what this is, is and act of desperation on the losers part and and proof that you've just won the argument.
