Bottom line is that even though the teachings of Scientology are completely insane it still is a religion just for the fact that people want it to be. In regards to the UK (where I am from), Scientology is not a recognised religion, and was even denied charity status. Look up religion in the dictionary. If it had to do strictly with supernatural forces, then the definition would not go as far as adhering to the 9 different definitions it has. Scientology fits right into the definition of "religion of humanity." If anything, it's probably a more pure religion than any other religion in existence, being that it has been taking into consideration today's world. It's more like a new world religion. Naturally, it's going to seem psychotic to most people; but how do you think Jews perceive Christianity, and how do you think Mormons perceive Catholicism and so on and on? If you ask me, the bottom line is that every religion is fkn insane, period. Whether it's Christianity or Scientology. The fact is, religion gives people a sense of being in this world; not everyone NEEDS a deity to feel like they have a purpose here. With that said, yes, Scientology is a religion. And furthermore, claiming Tom Cruise or any other scientologist an idiot is ignorant; you don't even know them; You have zero grounds for your claim of thinking you're better than them. Scientology's beginnings are no different than the beginnings of Mormonism, Christianity, or any other religion. The only difference is that the latter two have been around long enough for their crazy beliefs, founders, and the ruthless tactics they've used to found their religion have become obscured by time. To most outsiders, they don't see the doctrines, they just see a large body of believers with "good intentions" and consider the religion legitimate on this basis alone. Joseph Smith Jr. was a crazy puritan who claimed the Native Americans were a lost tribe of Israel, and that he found special tablets that Jesus left behind on his post-resurrection tour of the West that only he could read with magic glasses. He was killed by an angry mob who shot him and his cohorts in a jail cell like rabid dogs because, just like Scientology, they were litigious, contentious, and colluded with local government to squelch dissent and criticism. LOL. A religion has to have a God, they just have a set of beliefs. It is clearly science fiction, i mean the founder was a science fiction writer, coincidence? obviously not, he even got busted many times for molesting children.
