Is social networking ultimately beneficial or detrimental to society?

New technology in the field of social networking and innovative websites have changed the way people communicate.

People now have the ability to share their opinions and ideas over a wide audience, broadcast their current location and activity to the world, and create loose connections over the internet.  Does such easy access to information and people make us more sociable, or does it allow us to sit in front of a computer and feel like we're socializing?  We can find news from various sources and be notified of things faster, but all together, will this change us for the better or for the worse?

It may be too early to tell for sure, but what are some thoughts on whether social networking beneficial or detrimental to society?

Social networking just adds another optional social mechanism. People still can and do socialize in the real world.

The bad thing about social network sites, is people tend to "network" less in real life.

That, and I hate the word network when referred to in human interaction, but that's just a personal prejudice I have.

But as for knowledge, there is nothing better.

Sure there's misinformation, but I find that the right information is spread faster online, and corrected faster when wrong, more than anywhere else in the world.

definitely...social networking do keep us home more, but if you wanna find any info...its definitely a boon...

BENEFICIAL! As long as you do other things than that and as long as you don't give away personal information I think it's beneficial! You can talk to family and friends for FREE!

I think it is because social networking is the new writing letters or email or whatever. Its the same as telling your grandmother "Hi" or to your dad. Everyone these days have a facebook or a twitter or a myspace. all the same thing as typing up an email. If you say social networking is stupid or dumb, then so are emails because you do the same exact thing but you get a reply much later. So its not stupid or dumb, its how we communicate these days.

we live in a digital age, when being wired in seems as normal as inhalation. as the 35 plus crowd jumps on the social networking bandwagon, professional networking via these virtual portals is becoming easier and often times expected by business contacts, we meet new people and get t see the world from other points of views.=D

You cannot beat face to face communication.

Enough said.

I think the increasing trend towards social networking sites is ultimately bad for the intelligence of society. Sure, they're writing, but what and how? Nothing important and not very well.

People are stupid enough as it is, and I fear that these sites are just making us dumber.

What and how? I guess people are writing whatever the feel like, and that should be something good, no? People having the chance to express themselves freely, without having to follow a standard. When you say that nothing important comes out of it, you are directly supporting the idea that people in general don't know what they should be doing, they need guidance, they need to follow grammatical rules, they need to stay restricted to standard models, they should be talking about certain things in a certain way. People have been having dumb thoughts since ever, the difference is that now they have the chance to share them with the world. We can take it as a bad thing and wish these people would be forbidden to show the world what is inside their heads, or we can be positive and trust that the human mind will slowly do a natural selection which favors important memes.

I disagree.

Actually specifically to the "what and how" people are typing,

I find that some come to a social network site, (not necessarily this one, but I've seen it here too) and they type like this

YO IM HERE ALL WHAT UP WIT DAT ECONOMY DAWGS!!!!! HIT ME UP

Or whatever.

Then they either disappear because they're simply too dumb to function productively, or they improve, get a little brigher.

In my point of view social networking sites are a boon as they help us to say freely whatever we want as compared to their talks with their parents as they can't share everything with them as their is some kind of fear which leads to stress and a friend on sites can be told about the problem as if we are scared of telling our problems to a person by facing him or her than it is the best way i think.....our parents doesn't ever think about our privacy.. they think that we should share each and everything with them which is somehow cool but that does not give us any personal space.... that's what my opinion is and i completely disagree with my opponents view as every coin has two sides so why we are seeing just one side if we saw some children using them not rightfully that doesn't mean that everyone is so like them some are even matured enough to understand this and i want that each and everyone who thinks that social networking sites are a bane must read this....
