Is the commercialisation and commodification of sport positive or negative?

The commercialisation of Australian sports is inevitable as it is a lucrative market for big businesses.  Do you agree or disagree? Write a coherent argument on the position that you are on. Ensure that you support your argument with an example. For starting a novel argument/point, your team will get 1 mark. Repetition of points/arguments will not warrant any marks. You are also strongly encouraged to rebutt and critically oppose the other side's arguments. For a good rebuttal, you will be awarded 2 marks

Let the free market do what it does. If there is a demand for commercialized sports then it is what it is. But my caveat to that is if demand falls or simply fails to live up to expectations then teams should end or sports should fail instead of taxpayers being asked to prop up or pitch in.

The commercialisation of sports opens it up to a wider audience, increasing its popularity thanks to the (mainly financial) support of sponsors.

The very nature of commercialization is that it creates jobs. Jobs for the community in the merch stands, making uniforms and stitching up footballs. It also supports businesses by providing them with an audience to advertise to, and refines that markets interests so the marketing they use is specific to their interests. Also, it helps Rupert Murdoch get richer by having to pay to access sports being televised. GO RUPERT! FOXTEL!!! WOoo......

Also, it gave alcohol companies opportunity to put their brand on headbands and hats.

It gives professional athletes an opportunity to travel around the world to represent our nation through all the funding and profits of commercialising the sport.

The commercialisation of sport is positive as it promotes an active and healthy lifestyle to people around the world. It also creates jobs through huge sporting events and creates a sense of unity within different countries and regions.

The commercialisation of sport has created a market for gambling websites and apps who have increasingly advertised throughout sports events. This is a serious concern as it is creating a culture where sport and gambling go hand in hand.

Side: Negative

Commercialising sport has created an environment where the nature of sport is not about playing for the love of the game but rather the rewards of money and sponsorship. This has created an environment where people would rather cheat then lose.

By capitalising on sporting events, the original purpose of sport for enjoyment is undermined. Being driven by money is distracting and the focus should be brought back to the pure roots of sport.
