Is there a Difference Between a Lie and an Untruth?

Yes, culturally speaking a white lie is very small, an untruth is a slightly bigger fib, and a lie is a malicious deception. Both the white lie and the untruth are used in gentler situations.

In definition they are identical, but grammatically they are different, and therefore used differently. A lie is a noun and untrue is an adjective.

That's why I posted this... if someone tells a lie, they know it's untrue but if they tell an untruth, they don't. Or at least that's the way I always viewed it, right or wrong.

I hadn't considered the possibility an "untruth" is something told by accident. Indeed that is sometimes the case. But I think in politics there are also plenty of times what is called an untruth was no accident.

An untruth means a lie.

The first one is used sometimes by politicians as an euphemism and/or a polite way to accuse someone of telling lies.
