Is there any evidence for a belief in any of the ancient Gods

I have been studying religion for years. I have seen no evidence of any of the Gods written about in the ancient texts. I know that the stories are many of miracles and witnesses of God yet investigating theses stories they always fall short of being credible.

I think it would be remarkably difficult to find evidence that would stand up to scientific standards. Faith and religion are more personal experience or taught beliefs than they are empirical evidence for existence.

Gods such as the Roman or Greek gods fit niches that were designed for them. Superstitions and lack of scientific study would typically create a God or deity that would explain phenomena that we now have causes for, such as thunder and lightening. Often times the worship of a deity was used to initially bring people together for a greater purpose, especially during times of hardship and turmoil. What we now know the reasons to, many times people would assume was the act of a God, such as a flood or rainbow or plague. I think belief is just that, it's belief.

There has never been one shred of evidence for a belief in any god or gods , they're merely tall tales to control and keep the sheeple in line .

Our ancestors used god stories as an explanation for phenomena they could not comprehend , unfortunately this trend continues as can be evidenced by the type of believer that's seems to be prevalent on CD and who also use god as an explanation for what they fail to comprehend .

I haven't came across any sufficient evidence myself.

When I was young I went through a phase where I entertained the possibility, in fact I was trying to figure out what kind of god to believe in. For almost my entire life I had never really bought into religion or even spirituality for the most part. Didn't really even believe in an afterlife. Didn't take any of it seriously, after all my dad didn't have strong convictions, he kept his mind up in the air so to speak. My mom had her own personal spirituality that she had always kept to herself. So I had nobody telling me what I should believe with this god and afterlife stuff.

One day I decided to come up with my own spirituality by simply contemplating on gods existence. After all there were some ideas I liked better than others and seemed much more reasonable. This was all in middle school. I asked myself what a god was, what an afterlife was, etc.

This little phase of sorts was how I originally became a self proclaimed atheist. I asked myself every question I could until the question came up "Where did the god concept come from?"

All concepts are either a reality or not a reality. All conceptions are created by the functions of our brain (our mind) AND one of 2 other things. Reality or Imagination. Possible conceptions that turn out to be real are practically never conceived independently from reality. Nobody ever discovered something after making it up, or if anyone has that person should maybe get a lottery ticket or used some form of evidence (and thus reality) to conceptualize. Either the god concept is pure imagination or god itself is evident somehow. There is every form of evidence conceivable put forward for god. Everything from ancient texts to debunked miracles to rationalizing anything and everything existing being evidence, and yet we can't form a consensus on what constitutes as evidence let alone on conclusive evidence. We spend seemingly forever arguing over details of fables revolving around gods. That tells me the god concept wasn't extrapolated in the reality around us, it came from inside us, we made it up. I can never know that for sure but I came to realize that personally I never had a good reason to believe gods are real. As far as I can tell nobody else does either, I see a lot of bad reasons to believe gods exists that are definitely being used but seemingly no logical reason believe in one, but then again if I thought there was I wouldn't be an atheist.

No, not scientific evidence. There is "witness testimonials" which are used as evidence in court. But we know that first hand accounts are the least reliable sources of evidence possible. I like to think of these stories as metaphors for deeper truths about life.

I haven't found any "evidence" of any "god". I have nothing against a person having a belief that helps s/he cope, gives the strength to handle the trials of life. If they need that and it works for them, great! When others use it to criticize and berate others, use it to feel superior to others, it's not just a "belief". It is a weapon to defend their own insecurity (can't exist without the entity), and to give them the strength they would like to have, but, can't feel without it. It's like a gun. There are good uses for it, and bad.

well stated my friend I have played along with religious belief to make friends or family feel better about it. Yet when other use it as a means of superiority I disprove each and every aspect of validity

Belief in god is faith based only.

The thing about faith is that it can't be disproved since the very concept verifies itself. It is very convenient when you need to believe in something that may comfort you in some way.

Yes, 'Thor the Thunder God' whom I hear booming and bellowing his annoyance with the human race regularly.

In my opinion there is more evidence for the existence of this ancient Norse Deity than the popular notions of the masses.

Or we could become pragmatic and see the obvious truth that all pagan religions worshipped the same thing, all non Christian religions worship the same thing, and Atheists worship the same thing. It's why they all have had the same exact symbols from the very beginning to today.
