Is torture acceptable in national security issues?

Is it acceptable for the U.S. military to use torture as a means of obtaining information from captured enemies (particularly terrorists) if other human lives are at stake?

If I had to choose between torturing someone for information and leaving them alone with the chance that thousands would die, I would choose to torture them.

I think we should be tough on potential criminals/conspirators, but what make America, America is that all people have rights. Im not saying we should totally pansy around, but there needs to be a balance so we are tough, but not making ourselves look like a monster.
