If a person has Body Integrity Identity Disorder, and they want to remove their lower left leg, then all agree that they have a mental illness. But if a person has Gender Dysphoria and wants to remove their sex organs, then it is somehow controversial to claim they have a mental illness. Side: Yes.
My take on the matter is this. Transgenderism is a 'mental disorder' that becomes an illness if the person becomes so suicidal over the inability to change their physical gender. It is extremely important to note that the urge to physically alter their body comes from society teasing and labelling them or worse based on their physical attributes so it's not simply a matter of 'okay teach them to like their physical sex as their psychological gender'. The fact of the matter is that if they are above the age of consent then they should be welcome to consent to hormone therapy and even operations that make them happier in life. It doesn't harm anyone but themselves at worst and at best it liberates them from a mental trap. Side: Yes.
