It ought to be illegal to wear turbans.

They're making it illegal to wear a hijab in some European nantions, it ought to be illegal to wear a turban. Both are equally discriminatory, the only difference is that women have to wear hijabs, but only men need to wear turbans.

This is a more complex subject than the debate implies.

If I'm not mistaken, the reason for making them illegal was not out of discrimination, but to curb the abusive practices of husbands in a specific migrating culture.

That the ban attracted an evil populist anti-Muslim following was not I think the original intent.

Obviously anyone should be allowed to wear whatever they like.

However, women married or not, should not be the sole property of a culturally unevolved husband regardless of what that unevolved culture says.

They believed a good way to begin to breach this problem without singling out individuals was to simply ban turbans.

Perhaps it would be better to single out individuals. However so long is there is not a better solution to the obvious problem, I do not begrudge this ban in those European States.

I think at least if any person gets killed for drawing a picture of a guy with a turban and kalling him Muhammad - then we should outlow turbans

It should not be illegal to wear either one.

It ought to be illegal to force someone to wear either one against their will.

That's pretty much exactly what I tried to convince somebody - I think it was aveskde - the other month.

Many want to wear their hijab, just as many Sikhs want to wear their turban.

We're talking about burqas in particular, but what you don't seem to realise is that women are culturally compelled to wear them. It's like FGM, a practice so entrenched in tradition that the women will say they want it even though it's clearly against their best interests.

The point of banning the burqa is to prevent the importation of misogyny into western culture, by forcing a break from tradition. We're not at the point yet when we can simply ban the forced wearing of religious articles. Give it a few decades of an outright ban to break the tradition and assimilate Muslims into western culture, then relax the law so that by then women will have enough autonomy in Muslim communities that they can choose what they want without being intimidated or pressured.

The issues are asymmetric. A turban is not a mandatory religious clothing article designed to make the wearer invisible. The turban doesn't carry with it a legacy of mysandrony towards those who refused to wear it in public.

A hijab (especially burqa) is a clothing article designed to minimise the presence of women in a society, it carries no dignity, but a history of women being under the heels of men.

Turbans do not cover the face, neither does Hi jab, so neither should be made illegal in my opinion, it is Burkas that would present a problem.

If you want to ban turbans (which are a religious requirement not just a traditional clothing accessory like the hijab) then shouldn't you ban any form of head wear?

I'm against banning it, I was simply trying to prove the idiocy of banning any form of headdress. Many are for the banning of the burka.

Ooohhh I'm all for banning it.

I guess it's more of a gesture to muslims, letting them know that they can't bully the French...

maybe?

Niqabs and burkas should be banned because they pose a security risk. In many places, it's illegal to conceal your identity in public by wearing a mask, and this is no different.

I know if I ever feel like robbing a bank, the first thing I'll do is dress up in a Muslim Darth Vader costume.

Turbans on the other hand, just make a person look stupid.

A hijab does not cover the face, it wraps around the head covering the hair and neck.

No, that's a hijab.

no, actually not. people say that wearing a turban prevents a person from wearing a helmet but a turban too protects one's hhead in cases of accident.

It is utterly unfair to force someone to remove a turban. They could wear it for religious reasons. Just because we do not agree with that religion, doesn't mean that we should stop wearing a turban. We should respect religion and religious tradition.

It could be to do with fashion or style. Why should us westerners stop people living in the east wear a turban! That would be like banning jeans. It would be unfair, unnecessary, stupid and arouse many rebellions.
