Kaepernick hero, Villanueva zero...

So... we've been beaten over the head with the idea that Colin Kaepernick is a hero for not standing for the National Anthem and that it is "freedom of speech". Fair enough. But then Alejandro Villanueva, a veteran of the military, was the only Pittsburgh Steeler to come out and salute the flag. Hero? Nope. Called vulgar names? Yep. These are the days when up is down and right is wrong...

Hello bront:

As a lover of the Constitution, I think ANYBODY who stands up for their rights IS a hero..

Anybody who criticizes them is an asshole..

While I do agree on the fact of standing up for rights, their are some times when people protest for their rights that goes too far.I also understand that if a person wants to sit down during the national anthem, pledge of allegiance,etc.. they can,but it be more of an symbol to boycott the police stations or protest right outside the white house that way it does not involve people whom do not want to get in the tense argument such as the Steelers .

So yes I do agree with you excon on the subject,However their are mor effective ways to do it .

Okay. I'm standing up for my right to tell anti Americans to kiss my ass. If you oppose my stance, you're an asshole. Cheers.

I certainly would never characterize any of these folks as heroes or villains for standing or not. This is all just too low risk and unimportant.

The only person involved who could be reasonably characterized as heroic, is Villanueva, but that is for what he did in the military, not for standing on the field for the national anthem.

This is one of the situations where everyone involved has the right to do what they are doing (or might do).

Anyone has the 1st Amendment right to stand or kneel for the national anthem as they choose. It is not illegal or heroic to be rude.

Because it is at work, the employers have the right to make demands, set limits, etc. as to what is acceptable player behavior. This includes standing, sitting, stretching, being in the locker room, or being on the field while either sitting or standing.

Employers also have the right to fire, or not hire, anyone for any of the above.

Donald Trump, or anyone else, has the right to call for a boycott of Football.

Sponsors have a right to continue to support or not various teams, players, media outlets, etc. based on any of this.

Fans have the right to watch or not, buy tickets or jerseys or not.

The fact is that BECAUSE EVERYONE has made these statements and decisions NONVIOLENTLY, it is all fine. Everybody is using the 1st Amendment as it was designed to be used.

It all makes me proud and grateful to be an American.

Hello marcus:

Nahhh.. Not in this instance.. These employers have the right to NEGOTIATE with the players union, and the union will NEVER, NEVER, EVER agree to it..

Fair enough. I did not add the required clauses.

"Employers also have the right to fire, or not hire, anyone for any of the above ..."

...that are interpretable as violating any NFL or Team rules as stated in the contract, including rules and clauses in the contract regarding civil conduct and image, (e.g., a "morals clause") on and off the field.
