I believe the age is 18, right? Therefore, I think I speak for most people when I say "leave it there." I'm 17, and I know girls who are 15 and 14. They find older guys, like in college, attractive. If you allow these girls to have sex before 18, they are going to flirt with the older guys. I know this is a pretty lousy argument, but just keep it at 18. I don't think people would even WANT to have sexual intercourse with a minor, unless he is a pedophile or the minor matured rather quickly.

Side: Keep it the same

Most definitely raise it to at least 17. I'm not here to try and convince you that kids won't have sex no matter what the age is but one good thing might come of it...if a girl gets pregnant at 17, she is more likely to be able to care for that baby. If she gets pregnant at 14, then what? Abortion? The parents take care of the new child as well as the teen? The older, the better is what I think, but I know we cannot enforce it properly.

Raise it (as well as drinking and smoking age) to 25.

@ModusPonem ROFL. 25. End of argument. I think that one person should be mature enough to be engage in this activity. Good points raised that they should be able to take care of the baby after, say a pregnancy occur. Teens getting pregnant would caused some medical problems on their health because their bodies are not mature enough to carry a child this is also not good for the baby because they cant get the proper amount of nourishment that they need. It is also more likely that an abortion occur if teens would get pregnant.

I don't really think that a legal minimum sexual intercourse age should be set at all. I think that premarital sex of any kind should be illegal. Having a law like this would have a positive moral effect on America's unmarried citizens.

This is the real truth behind the push to keep raising the age of consent, thanks for being honest about it. The truth is the groups that primarily push for raising the age true goal is no sex outside of marriage. The problem is they want this for everyone, what you want for yourself doesn't matter to them.

Yes, there are some other misguided but well meaning groups too. They say birth at a young age is dangerous for the mother and child. I'm not saying this is wrong, I'm saying many of these groups keep pushing 18 as the age, yet research has proven 15 (and over) is the "safe" age. Another argument is emotional maturity, yet we don't reach emotional maturity till around 23/24, is anyone seriously pushing for that to be the age of consent?

The problem is two fold, groups with hidden agendas and adults that find teens having sex icky. Well, it's normal, innate, and natural behavior... so get over it. Personally I don't get it, it's like once we become adults we forget what we were like as teens ourselves. I wanted and had sex early, as did many of my friends. Yet, none of the girls I slept got pregnant (other than as an adult while married), because even as a teen I knew how important birth control was. In the end, the choice to have sex is an individual's right, sex ed is important, access to healthcare, and access to birth control is also important.

It was gonna happen sooner or later. Might as well expect it then.

Neither.

Make it legal for marriage only and let kids get married at 14 if they wish. As long as they pass a class on marriage and parenting. If kids are truly mature enough for sexual intercourse then they are mature enough (and ready)to support each other. Most kids under 18 are not. It's like the space in between childhood and adulthood keeps getting shorter and shorter.

Although this is all really difficult to enforce. The best we can do is teach abstinence. Yeah nobody likes that idea, trust me I know. And I have heard it all so don't bother.

Call me old fashioned(these days I take that as a complement) but I don't want to raise kids in a society where it is normal for 14 year olds to have sex. Anyone els!?!?

well, we can't arrest kids for having sex. that'll just be stupid.

although, it is USUALLY fucked up when an 18 y/o bangs a 14 y/o. but hey, we can't make a perfect world.

Kids are maturing faster than ever and being given more responsibility than ever, and a one-size-fits-all law such as the statutory rape law are absurd and lead to more harm than the lack of such law could possibly do. For example, I or someone I know (you'll have to guess) lost her virginity at 16 to a 21-year-old. It sounds fucked up, until you recognize the levels of maturity involved.

I don't think there's any 15-year-old who doesn't realize what s/he is getting into when s/he has sex.

It's a much better idea to have age groups, such as how in New York State, a 17-year-old can have sex with anyone below 22, although that idea should be expanded upon. Such as, 15-year-olds (or something) can have sex with anyone up to... oh... I don't know. What do you think? What do you think is appropriate?

Side: Lower it!

People who are for raising the age are having a knee-jerk emotional response and not thinking about the unattended consequences of such laws. These laws do far more harm than good, we live in a time when sexting among teens is in fact normal behavior. Why do seeming rational adults think labeling these same teens as sex offenders and charging them with crimes is "protecting" them? It's the same with sex, the desire and need for sex is innate and usually starts around the onset of puberty. Keep your moral argument opinions out of this, just as you have a right to make your life choices, so does everyone else have the right to make their own choices. Yes, sex ed, access to healthcare, and condoms is also important.
