Libertarian Thinking, and how it pisses off others

Now, I do not exactly consider myself a Libertarian because I do support Government spending and Progressive Taxing.  I just don't support programs that benefit the poor at expense of the richer.

But I was reviewing older arguments and something caught my eye.  Someone had said that deciding who deserves money is not the government's job (in view of redistribution of wealth).  Ledhead (a major liberal on this site) responded by saying "right, it's instead their job to tell us who to marry, what to put in our bodies" and blah blah blah.  Sure, that argument works against a Republican, and Republicans deserve a comeback like that, but it doesn't against a Libertarian.  Libertarians are for same sex marriage (or against marriage in general), are against drug bans, against bans on all other vices.  They're basically for the government butting out of our private lives.

This pisses off both Liberals and Conservatives, but I see Libertarians and Conservatives joining sides more often (mainly because Democrats aren't liberal where it counts).  Let's face it, Libertarians have a consistent belief structure and it's very hard to come up with bullshit arguments (like Ledhead's) against a Libertarian.  I am very close to a Libertarian except for the things I've said before, so this may be why I find their logic admirable.  But look to people like Penn and Teller or Trey Parker and Matt Stone.  They seem to be right about everything they bring up.  And they're all Libertarians.

Although, don't get this confused with Geraldo Rivera or Bill Maher, who are basically just Liberals who think it's cool to call themselves Libertarians.

I find myself leaning towards being a libertarian more every day.

Partly because you can't force people to do the right thing. Which is the biggest flaw that conservatives, mainly republicans have. (prohibition of alcohol etc.) And that's just it I can't decide what "doing the right thing" is for you, that drinking alcohol is a bad choice for you. Just like you can't decide that I can't eat 4 big macs a day. (not that I do =) Although they are both unhealthy, there is no law involved. Its none of anyones business how much unhealthy things I consume(except maybe close family) let alone the government.

It's just hard to bring myself to be for legalizing weed, or for same sex marriage. Although I guess I don't have to be for any of those things. Instead I'm just for freedom.

As a religious person it makes more sense to be libertarian because the best way to show people to do the right things are through example. Not through the law.

It's not an easy change to make. But I'm getting there.

[as for weed, If it's legalized it should be legalized. I don't like this gray area with shady clinics for people who "need it" can just come and get their fix. It just seems dishonest. We should officially legalize it or officially NOT legalize it. Make sense?]

Freedom to do what? Whatever? Ejemplos: you say that you can't decide what is right for others. But you can, no, we can decide what's wrong. It is wrong for an adult to have sex with little kids, and by little kids I mean prepubescent children. I don't think there's even a libertarian out there that would argue otherwise, and try to propose that that should be up to the states or individual discrimination. We can decide that driving while under the influence of a certain level of alcohol ought to be illegal--no, that's too strong: "should be illegal"--because at that point you are likely to infringe on other individuals. Do you disagree?

Libertarians would be against pedophilia and driving under the influence because they are for personal freedoms, not infringing freedoms. You can do w/e you want to yourself, just don't hurt others.

It is logical.

You get extreme there not one party would want to eliminate the obvious protection laws on the books for children and all the other basic moral fundamentals such as having sex with children that's not freedom that would be a sick society. libertarians are more about personal choice freedoms and bogus laws that are passed everyday that take away from you everyday.

I should have been more clear.

You are right, we can and do decide that. I should of said that the only time we decide that is when somebody is harmed. Therefore including pedophilia murder, rape, drunk driving etc. I was mainly talking about prohibition.

The libertarian party is the fastest growing party and receiving more members in the last ten years than any other. Conservatives tend to favor Libertarians because Libertarian platform largely is for little or no Government and less control over the individual. Blue dog dems like Lieberman who was a democrat but got sick of both parties control issues changed to Libertarian a few years ago and many have followed. I have thought to many time registering as Libertarian.

I don't know. I find more and more these days that self-described libertarians are usually nothing more than disaffected conservatives who have realized that the modern conservative movement has absolutely no traction.

So I'm not sure how 'libertarian thinking' would piss anyone off. Give me a reasoned argument, I don't care what you call it.

Libertarians are the best political party out there.

Liberals & Conservatives both lead to the same thing: totalitarianism

Libertarians are the best political party out there.

Why? What exactly are libertarian policies and why would they work for an entire country?
