Libertarian philosophy- I think I may have broken it

So I've been watching videos by learn liberty on youtube and they got me thinking. They are all about how government is unnessisary and how the free market can not only self regulate (wich I not only agree with but would argue that it is to some extent designed to do so) but that it can also regulate society. But the problem arose when they kept referencing the law as a factore in many of there purposed scenarios. My question is with out government who makes the laws? And if someone or some group of people are making laws then don't we have a government?

Yep...get the trash bin.

The particular movement you're referring to, the one that eschews the idea of government altogether, is not libertarianism as a whole, but rather a subset of libertarianism called anarcho-capitalism.

This represents only one of many different subsets of libertarianism, and is the only one that is opposed to government entirely. Most libertarians are in favor of small government- not NO government.

Furthermore, anarcho-capitalists don't tend to assume that law is a factor in any of the proceedings. It seems to me that you're mixing and matching different flavors of libertarianism. The cynic in me wants to accuse you of intentionally setting up a strawman, but the better part of me feels that you were probably just misinformed.

It's also possible that the individuals you were listening to don't really understand their own platform. It wouldn't be the first time, nor will it be the last. For any political party.

I had assumed anarcho-Capitalism and Libertarianism were the same thing. I am for limited government but I also recognize that government is and always will be to some extent a necessary evil. I find the idea that society can exist without government to be a bit naive.

Libertarian philosophy has some flaws but saying that it requires a government to make laws is not 'breaking' it.
