I've always said it like this, so much saying math feels wrong.

Side: Maths

I know saying math is just weird.

maths sounds weird.. math sounds better

Side: Math

Mathematics is a plural, so its shortened version should also be plural, not singular.

'Mathematics' is not a plural- it is a word that ends in 's' that describes a field of study. There isn't an alternate singular form.

Compare 'Physics.' 'Physic?' Not even the same field.

Compare 'Chemistry.' 'Chemistries?' No.

I'm all for spelling it maths, but this is a piss-poor reason to do so.

Side: Maths

I'm interested to what other reasons there are for spelling it maths?

Out of curiosity, do the Brits also consider it acceptable to shorten "gymnastics class" to "gyms class"?

Side: Math

a word does not have to end in s to be a plural.

Apparently some countries do it differently ref, but growing up in the US, math sounds better to me. I would also shorten Economics 101 to Econ 101 rather than Econs 101.

In the U.S. we say math. It not only sounds more correct to my ears, but to my sense of logic it makes more sense. You're shortening the word it is known to be, thus no reason to keep the part that lets you know it's plural.

It should be math. Maths sound really dumb and really weird to say.

No, it is Math that sounds weird.

Like others have said, a word does not need an s suffix in order to be plural.

Math sounds better than maths.

Since mathematics is often treated as a singular collective (e.g. "My favorite class is mathematics"),

math would have the appearance of better subject/verb agreement.
