The Bible has sexism, too. And why? Because all these holy books from which world religions sprung were written by human beings, not by God himself. They are influenced by the cultures and world events of the human authors. And they sound threatening and archaic because these were Bronze Age cultures not yet matured beyond that point. The hardcore Muslim extremists are making the mistake of believing God himself ordered them to say and do the terrible things they do. You have very little difference. The sane, balanced, normal people of this world tolerate all religions (including the Muslim faith) because the preponderance of peoples in the various different religions are indeed moderate and sensible and willing to work together as a society. And the irony is your push to have them reject all Muslims because of the nonsense of their sexism is actually a reason for us to reject your own absolutism as well. Islam is more than a religious belief. Both major denominations of Islam are religious hierarchical structures in which the clergy plays a central role. These structures control almost all aspects of the lives of the devout. For a significant percentage of congregations, the level of control is such that it makes them political structures. So, it's not the contents of the Koran that makes a difference here, but the way Koran is interpreted and transmitted onto the congregations. The ethics and laws in these counties are based totally on these interpretations. Unlike what some so-called "progressives" want to make us believe, the barbaric and violent aspects of Islam are part of the system and not part of a marginal exclusion. Modern Christianity has nothing even remotely resembling this. |
