Non-STEM degrees are a consumer good and not an investment

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors consistently dominate the top ranks of highest paid university degrees while those with liberal arts degrees struggle to get a job at Starbucks. Have liberal arts degrees become something that should be seen as a consumer good and no longer be considered an investment?

I would put having a four year liberal arts degree slightly above a four year consecutive work history. You have to take minimal maths, science, history, and English classes to get the degree, other than that they both only show you can stick to something for four years.

You must be forgetting the ~$50k worth of debt. Plus, if you worked for 4 years, you could have a few thousand dollars worth of savings.

Of course, you would not want to be a person without a degree in this economy. But, it would be even worse to be ~$50k in debt and working at a job that doesn't pay enough to justify that debt (total increase in lifetime earnings < cost of education). I would suggest getting a STEM degree or becoming a tradesman (auto mechanics, welder, appliance repairmen, plumbers, electricians, etc) or technician. Liberal arts degrees are for rich kids. The markets for those degrees are saturated, we don't need any more liberal arts majors. What will happen if continue to have more liberal arts majors is we will see more and more people unable to pay back their loans because their work isn't worth anything.

Having a degree in economics, I am keenly aware of exactly why I am unemployed.
