Obama chooses evangelist who supported gay marriage ban to deliver invocation

I don't know why he chose this particular person to give the Invocation but I think it is a slap in the face to every gay American that this man stand there and invoke the name of God in prayer for this President. He might have chosen any number of clergy whose track record is one of a world more accepting of Gay people so as to negate the disenfranchisement all Gays may feel when Warren stands at the podium/lectern. I don't know who has been chosen to deliver the Benediction but if Warren stands as the deliverer of the Invocation, I can only hope it would be someone with an opposing view to deliver the Benediction.

PS: The Gay population is very fond of Hilary and Bill Clinton. The fact that she's not Gay has nothing to do with it! The fact that both she and her husband have tried so hard to further their cause, has everything to do with it.

Obama garnered huge support from the gay population, (eventually, once they were over Hillary, what's up with that by the way? Hilary's not gay) now he's giving the spotlight to a man who very vocally supported a ban on gay marriage.

Sure, it's not a cabinet seat, but there are literally thousands who could deliver the invocation just as well, and who would not offend such a large segment of the population by his presence.

Well, Obama is actually against gay marriage... so it's not like it should be so surprising that he does things that fall in line with "anti-gay marriage" crap.

and of course it will piss off gays... they want to get married, and their new president is not only against them getting married, but also having some dude who is against it give some speech.

but... it all actually makes sense. what did they expect? for Obama to change his views on gay marriage once he becomes president? get real.

Get used to the fact that Obama supporters are going to have to share him with other people. He states and quite correctly in my humble opinion that people have to pull together in one direction in order to have the dramatic change that most seem to want. This means appease your enemies and cooperate with your opponents. It is also a wise strategy to bring those who who oppose you inside the tent so that they can be persuaded of their own wrong-headedness. Shown the light as it were. Remember this isn't the evangelist's inauguration. It is Obama's and the reverend (small r intended) is cast as a supporter of a President who very much supports the concept of equal treatment for all Those who should be most upset are the blockheads on the far right. They feed on antagonism, violent confrontation, fear and ignorance. One of their stars is going to be right up on stage cheering in the new President and by proxy all that Obama stands for. This is an amazing coup for Obama. This isn't a stage for whack jobs who gay bash and if the reverend tries he will do more harm to his own cause that to the gay rights movement. He will alienate even more people away from the evangelical cause. This guy Obama is intelligent like maybe no other President the US has ever had. Trust him because he is way ahead of all of us and he will change the direction of America without causing a world war.

I don't believe his choice in any way preludes the type of policies he supports.

Sometimes a speech is just a speech.

Not every person Obama has any interaction with has to agree with every single person who voted for him on every single issue.

And Warren supports many many causes that fall right in line with Obama's supporters.

I agree actually, this appointment was a political move, showing that he's reaching across the aisle. And as stated above, he agrees with Obama on many other points.

People are taking this way out of control. This is a speech from a guy that Obama has been friends with for a long time. The one time a liberal tries to reach accross the aisle, and aqll the other liberals are up in arms.

C'mon guys, have some common sense. I thought the Dems were the party of tolerance? Be tolerant of those with other views. Take it easy. If McCain had won and picked someone who was a pastor but was for gay marrige, I'd be fine with it. Reach accross the aisle, guys.

"Why can't we be friends?"
