Only workers should be allowed to vote.
Imagine if the people in **your** household decided to vote on how **you** should spend **your** money (even if they didn't work themselves and could vote themselves some pretty cool stuff at **your** expense like an iPod for when they are sitting at home bored while **you're** at work). If this was passed as law, you would start to see some pretty motivated people looking for work ;)

This is kind of a side, but sometimes I think you're under the impression you can afford every road you drive on, cop who protects you, FDA employee who makes sure your food isn't poinoned, etc, all by yourself. It's a group effort dude. Anyway, nothing would change even if you weren't allowed to vote unless you had a job. Both sides have equal numbers in the unemployment line, so I'm not sure what this unconstitutional law would accomplish for you. Side: now what are talking about

By definition, a loafer does not work and so doesn't earn money. If a loafer can't contribute by working to build the road and if he can't contribute by providing money, then why do I need him? For what? He's just a leech. The other people who don't work are probably not smart enough to work and so why should we let them vote? Are you advocating that we should let the insane to vote also? That's just crazy talk ;) Side: I've always thought that

Only tax payers should be allowed to vote. And just like in a corporation, where investors who have more invested in the company have a greater say in the company, those who are more invested; pay more taxes, should have more votes. Anyone not invested, should not get a vote. Side: I've always thought that

The problems with limiting voting rights to only employed people would include that you are disenfranchising members of families in which one or more people stays at home, people with dehabilitating diseases and in many instances their caretakers, retired people, students, a good many artists and writers, and people who are simply struggling through a bad economy, just to name a few. The great likelihood is that it would disproportionately disenfranchise women (as the larger group of stay-at-home parents), the elderly (who are retired), the sick (who may be unable to work), and the poor (for whom work opportunities may be more scarce). It would probably also disproportionately impact racial minorities who may be victims of employment discrimination. In practice, it would start looking a lot like a return to "only white landowning males can vote." Developing education, job-training, and job-placement programs is a better answer to rising unemployment than threatening to take away the rights of people who are already vulnerable. Side: No good for families
I agree. Many people have legitimate reasons for not having a job, and they absolutely still have a right to vote. I understand Joe's point about people who aren't working being able to get benefits from worker's money, but it's no excuse for such a huge rights infringement. Side: I want 2 vote me some benies

I prefer that the Middle Class in general is the only people allowed to vote. Think of Aristotle. He said that the Middle Class would be the most reliable voters because the Lower Class only focus on fixing their own lives and the Higher Class are most likely to vote on making their lives stay in tact. The Middle Class, on the other hand, live comfortably and work hard but still have much to work for. They will focus on the good of the country instead of what's good for themselves (most likely). Ha! I was being so facetious, but I think you knew that. ;-) I can't take credit for the idea, some conservative I listen to on the radio came up with it. Seriously, it's a terrible idea, giving too much power to those who already have it anyway. But alas... Side: I want 2 vote me some benies

I'd like to vote me some benies too but what do we do with the fringe members who are old enough to vote but still in college or in training of some kind. They're old enough to know what's going on and old enough to vote. In due time your kids will stop demanding things and be on their own to. That's life kiddo. Side: I want 2 vote me some benies

This country is in the mess that it is in right now because everyone thinks they are entitled to everything for free (let someone else pay for it). Everyone wants their benefits. If everyone made do with what they made and the government only took the bare minimum, then we would be in better shape. I don't like the fact that the government takes MY money and spends it as it sees fit without MY consent. I also don't see why the rich have to pay more for the use of something while the poor pay less for the same thing. Finally, the government should not spend more money than it takes in... unless we are at war defending ourselves (not attacking). I want government services to be provided by private companies. I doubt anyone on "benies" would vote themselves extras at the cost of reducing the overall standard of living. Maybe they'd vote to stop the military spending (in the US) which is destroying the standard of living of others rather than worry about taking more from the already honest hard working tax dodgers.
