People should fear American because the Cuban missile crisis

People should fear American power because during the Cuban missile crisis, the Soviet Union and USA came very close to destroying the planet

Reasons to agree: %

  1. Unanimously, the Joint Chiefs of Staff agreed that a full-scale attack and invasion was the only solution. They agreed that the Soviets would not act to stop the U.S. from conquering Cuba. If our president would have listened to his military leaders, he would have destroyed Soviet nuclear missiles, and killed soviet solders. The soviets would have responded. The anger within their population would have never let Gorbachev ratchet down the hostility.
  2. Because the USA came so close to nuclear war during the Cuban missile crises we proved to the world that we can not be trusted to pick good leaders.
  3. Because the USA came so close to nuclear war during the Cuban missile crises we proved to the world that we can not be trusted to make good decisions.

Reasons to disagree: %
  1. America did not almost destroy the planet during the Cuban Missile crisis.
  2. It natural to fear and resent powers that you can't control, but judge us by our history. We never tried to take over the world like France, Germany, Japan, or the Soviet Union.
  3. The world wouldn't have been safer during the Cuban Missile Crisis if America's military was weaker.

I did my reasons that I was able to come up with by myself here, instead of below, because when I did it below I was accused of trying to rack up points. I don't know what I think, and so I have come up with my understanding, and hope that we can brainstorm together reasons to agree and disagree.

There should be some sort of middle ground in this.

For one, people are stupid. Very stupid. Does that make them evil? No. What if they're evil? Maybe you should fear them then. Should you fear them if they're stupid and have power? Probably. There were probably a LOT of innocent Vietnamese people who truly feared America soully because of the Vietnam War (since our troops raped and pillaged villages).

But the fact is that, sure, we have extremely powerful weapons. We have a non-nuclear bomb that can destroy an entire city. It's called MOAB. We have a hydrogen-nuclear bomb that has ten times the destructive power of the original Atom Bomb. We know, because we tested this bomb by totally incinerating an uninhabited volcanic island with it.

Another fact is that we've practically made extinct an entire race of human beings: The Native Americans. They exist, sure. But barely. We were one step short of beings Nazis to them murdering them down to their last newborn baby.

So, in the past, we were evil and violent. In the recent past, we have become the most powerful weaponized country ever. The whole time, we've been EXTREMELY stupid.

Should people fear us?

Maybe.

Because ultimately, we still try to do good. We've killed millions of people, but we've only gotten better and better when it comes to humanitarian rights. We didn't get better in time to stop 200 years of slavery and almost an entire racial cleansing of the Native population, but... look now. We don't have those problems anymore. YES, we have problems with womens rights and religion and gay rights, but so what? That's NOTHING in comparison to nearly completing a whole ethnic cleansing!

So my point is that I don't care what people think. We're a very fucked up country no matter what we do, because we're stupid, violent, powerful, naive, and self-righteous. That can be good or evil. I suppose it's all up to fate. That's what happens when a pack of dogs has no real pack leader.

First off: your presentation in this one is much better. I understand that you were not intentionally point-farming, but it sure looked that way.

Secondly: I certainly won't say "fear for America", however, the subject you broach is, what, almost 50 years old? Is anyone in charge now a participant of the aforementioned crisis?

Life is change. A country should not be judged on actions that occurred when most of its current leaders weren't even old enough to vote.

But...there are plenty of more recent reasons for the world to fear us...
