The procedural format here is too cumbersome to be worthwhile. The procedure should be altered so that debate topics are presented in the form of a resolution that will be considered according to some type of parliamentary procedure and then formally voted on.

We do not have any kind of debate here. We have the same kind of free-for-all that is found on every other board on the internet. We essentially have the same arguments over and over again with no chance for any serious discussion.

Can you describe how you envision the rules of the debate? Would there first be a debate period and then a voting period?

Essentially I support you jafl but when I see some of the debates you've written they are so terribly long I really cannot get into them. It's almost as though you're looking for an in person or one on one debate with these long winded introductions of fact or alleged fact. I'm not trying to offend you, by all means, so please don't feel that way. What I have read has been very well put and very astute but perhaps just not up my alley, as it were.

It might be interesting to implement parliamentary procedure for certain specific debates, but to do so for all debates (whether on CD or otherwise) would become cumbersome quickly and would stifle the free, spontaneous expression of thought that CD's current format allows. For things like the town halls that occasionally crop up I think that a more structured discussion would be not only helpful but perhaps even necessary. Still, the diverse population of the Internet makes a more structured debate difficult, timezones must be synchronized, rules clearly and thoroughly disseminated and most importantly active and respected moderators found and trained.
