There is clearly a big difference between Progressivism and Communism.

Communism is an outgrowth of a misperception of how capitalism works as a manifestation of individual motivation, and what society really is. However, the perception of power is accurate. This results in draconian policies of oppression, imprisonment, mass murder, and enslavement of entire populations, all under the guise of shoving a utopian ideal down everybody's throat.

By contrast, Progressivism is an outgrowth of a misperception of what people are and what society is, and the corresponding belief that people are intrinsically powerless to deal with our own problems without government intervention. This is all overshadowed by a misunderstanding of power. This results in the earnest infantilization of the populace, and the naïve abandonment of policies and processes that work in favor of unproven ideas that merely sound good, all under the guise of shoving a utopian ideal down everybody's throat.
