There is indeed a trend that left wingers are more intelligent than right wingers. This is mediated by the left wing being generally higher in trait openness (which generally results in higher IQ). Though at the same time right wingers are higher in verbal IQ and general IQ is different for different types of right winger (Source 1, 2). To quote " My findings suggest that higher intelligence among classically liberal Republicans compensates for lower intelligence among socially conservative Republicans." In any case, stereotypes can hold true for the group and not the individual. This is why stereotyping is an inaccurate heuristic method of evaluating people. As proven by the statements black people are black, Russian people speak Russian and Japanese men have (naturally) dark hair. Oh wait... Just because something can be inaccurate in certain forms and conditions does not necessarily mean it is inaccurate in all forms and conditions. This would be guilt by association. Statements such as black people are black are tautological and have nothing to do with trends. The same goes for Japanese people having dark hair. When you speak of someone being Japanese in this context you are speaking about a genetic grouping of traits which includes dark hair. If you were talking about Japanese citizens, since some are white, this would not hold to be true. There is a difference between a stereotype and something which qualifies an individual as a member of that group. Since black Americans commit more crime than white Americans (Source 1), would you find it fair to characterize black Americans as criminals? This is why I stated that trends can be true for the group and not the individual. Stereotypes are, as aforementioned, an inaccurate heuristic method of evaluating people. An inaccurate mortar can hit it's target, it just won't hit it reliably. I'd also note that one of the major factors in IQ is poverty (Source 2). This could suggest that any IQ gaps are caused by the poor voting republican more than democrat in America (Source 3). Mass immigration after all, is generally a problem for the poor and a boon for the rich due to increased competition for unskilled labor. I think it's very simplistic to say that right-wingers are less intelligent. There is a tendency for them to be less well educated, but that alone doesn't necessarily mean they're less intelligent. Does the study take into account the different types of left- and right-wingers? For example, you can be fiscally right-wing but not morally right-wing. You can be a left-winger who believes everything they read in the newspaper. What sort of intelligence is being tested? People who are dogmatic are more likely to be less intelligent and this goes for both extremes on the left-right spectrum. This is because adhering blindly to one set of beliefs and immediately rejecting critical analysis of these beliefs implies gullibility and / or a lack of ability to think for oneself. Both right-wing and left-wing people can be dogmatic. Failing to critically analyse your own beliefs, or being unable to acknowledge that you aren't always right, doesn't necessarily mean low intelligence but it can be indicative. Prejudice, too, can and has been demonstrated by the left wing, although it tends to be wrapped up in a parcel of, "This isn't racism / sexism, it's justice." I think there is a general trend for the right-wing to have lower IQs than the left-wing, but I have a feeling that low IQs are associated with extremes and the higher IQs are generally more centrist. I completely disagree. And I think it's a strategic flaw for EITHER the liberal or conservative side to opperate under the assumption their opponent is less intelligent. However, what I CAN absolutely believe is true is that people less exposed to different ways of life generally are less agreeable to the validity of people living differently. So, for example, if you haven't been to college, and live in a community largely homogenous in race and religion, and can go decades without seeing major changes in your community, then you're more prone to be conservative and less tolerant of liberals. That makes sense. And on the flip side, if you went thorugh college and had lots of your ideas and preconceptions tested, and live in a melting pot, and see massive changes constantly going on where you live, then you are more prone to be liberal. When I refer to the heartland naively voting conservative all the time this is mainly what I mean. The only way they're less intelligent is because they're taking the bait hook line and sinker that all these folks different from them (the immigrants, and gays, and feminists, and atheists) are the reason their way of life doesn't thrive like it used to. That in and of itself isn't intelligent. The true source of their decline in way of life typically starts from whomever keeps feeding them the bull that it's the fault of all those other people. Look at those people and get mad, while the blamer takes your money and signs deals which leave you screwed. Indeed, that's becoming the idiot. Stupid is as stupid does.
