S4-05 (Group 2) Who was to blame for the conflict between Iraq and Kuwait?

Kuwait was to blame as Kuwait had intentions of destroying Iraq's economy. Firstly, it overproduced the oil it sold, costing Iraq over US $1 Billion in loses every time the price of a barrel of oil dropped by US $1, and this is especially serious as 90% of Iraq's economy depends on the sale of oil. On top of that, Kuwait tried to steal oil from the Iraqi side of the oil field by purchasing slant drill technology, allowing it to produce more oil without any detrimental effects to themselves. Furthermore, Kuwait denied stealing the oil and refused to pay US $2.4 billion in compensation to Iraq when Iraq demanded for it. Therefore Kuwait is to blame for the conflict as it had threatened Iraq's economy and Iraq had no choice but to take action as there was no compensation given.

The aim to destroy Iraq's economy by Kuwait was not limited to only oil production but also through the access to land. Iraq is considered a land locked country and Kuwait had the potential to block off Iraq's access to the gulf which would then affect oil transportation. If Iraq was unable to transport oil effectively, huge losses would incur for the Iraqi economy. Kuwait achieved land locking Iraq by not only preventing Iraq to claim ownership of the islands, but also refusing to lease the islands to Iraq.

Iraq was to blame because it made unreasonable demands. Iraq demanded that the Kuwaitis stop drilling for oil from the Rumalia oilfield completely and even pay US$2.4 billion when Kuwait insisted otherwise to accusations of them stealing oil by drilling for oil from the Iraqis side. There was no way for Iraq to clearly prove that Kuwait was indeed the one who stole oil as the borders between Iraq and Kuwait are unclearly-defined. Kuwait could have really drilled for oil from their side of the border. However, Iraq did not chose to listen to Kuwait’s side of story, choosing rather to impose such unreasonable demands for things that cannot be proven.

Statistics have shown that the oil levels in the Iraqi side of the oilfield dipped much more than the oil that was taken out of it by the Iraqis. And seeing how Kuwait has RECENTLY acquired slant drilling technology when there is no reason for them to need slant drilling, it is simple to put 2 and 2 together to see that Kuwait has been indeed stealing Iraqi oil, and therefore it is not unreasonable.

According to Iraq's official reason as to why they invaded Kuwait, they claimed that they had gone into Kuwait at the request of revolutionaries to free Kuwait from the ruling government. This means that they were for Kuwait's interest at heart. However, if this was true, how do you justify Iraq warning other countries not to intervene by threatening to kill Kuwaitis? They obviously do not have Kuwait's interest at heart and only invaded Kuwait for their own national interest. This is not justifiable.

Kuwait already gained independence from British 1961; however, it was Iraq which refused to recognise Kuwait's independence. For instance, in 1961, Iraq tried to claim sovereignty over Kuwait by sending it's troops over; clearly, Iraq intended to acquire it's control of Kuwait through use of military power. By repeatedly threatening Kuwait's sovereignty just for it's own, Iraq was apparently at fault for contributing to many of the major factors which resulted in the conflict.

Iraq's decision to control Kuwait can be justified by the simple fact that Kuwait has shown that it cannot govern itself properly. Inability to produce oil based on OPEC quotas, refusal to pay compensations that were supposed to be made to Iraq by stealing oil, not allowing Iraq access to land that they need without any justification, this shows how Kuwait is unable to govern itself properly. Therefore, Iraq was not at fault for using military power control Kuwait, in fact it could be said that it is a natural outcome.

Kuwait also showed a complete lack of respect to Iraq as during the mediation talks, Kuwait completely refused to give in on any territorial claims made by Iraq, and they did not intend on producing oil according to OPEC quotas. This showed Kuwait's unco-operative-ness towards the mediation talks and the complete lack of respect towards Iraq

However, even though our country, Kuwait, refused to give in on any territorial claims, it was for the sake of our natural interest and hence it is justifiable. In addition, it was Iraq who walked on peace talks all together, causing all negotiations to break down. In addition to that, Iraq instead choose to invade Kuwait, destroying any chance of further peace talks.

Other than claiming to territories, our country, Iraq did request for a lease on the islands so that our country would be able to have better access to the gulf. Unreasonably refusing to our requests without any concrete reasons on why our requests were refused showed that Kuwait treated Iraq like a bunch of fools, and to show that we the Iraqis are not a bunch of fools, a show of military might was necessary

Having just gained sovereignty back then, it would not be surprising that Kuwait was not willing to take the risks for giving in on territorial claim. Moreover, wouldn't the constant pressure from Iraq to threaten Kuwait's sovereignty probably have made it even more difficult for Kuwait to so easily agree on such claims? The conflict which had already been built up is what resulted in the uncertainty between both countries to agree on their terms. What, however, made Iraq instead to be more disrespectful was in fact Iraq's ignorance regarding the UN's ultimatum. Without even participating for the entire talk at all in 1990, Iraq resorted to invading Kuwait, significantly resulting in further conflict. Would a country which jumped in on using military forces still be clean in the cause of the conflict itself?

Kuwait also showed how over-reliant it can be on foreign countries. By looking towards foreigners like the United States to solve a problem that could be solved simply by complying to Iraq's requests, it showed that Kuwait was not sincere in solving the problem and instead wanted to rely on other countries with their international powers. Iraq believes that issues in the Middle East should be kept in the Middle East countries with Middle Eastern leaders, unless Kuwait has other hidden motives...

On the contrary, Kuwait looked to foreigners like the United States to solve a problem because the United States have been proven effective in settling conflicts peacefully. Also, because the United States are very powerful, no one would want to dispute and argue with them and hence they would not be challenged by others and the problem will be settled once and for all.

Kuwait just wanted military might to coerce Iraq into giving up on our requests. The United States have proven effective in settling conflicts by simply killing off whoever obstructed them, obviously it would be effective. The peaceful verses of the Quran outlaw the murder of innocent people, women, children

"Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loveth not transgressors. (The Noble Quran, 2:190)"

By sending the United States as a military deterrence towards Iraq, Kuwait is going against the Quran, further showing how Kuwait is so over reliant that it ignores religion
