I personally believe that sex education should be taught in the curriculum of public school. I believe education is the best way to prevent and reduce adolescent pregnancy, STD and STI rates, along with assisting in raising the average age that adolescents become sexually active. In my own public school we were given a brief sex education class that focused on the changes that occurred with puberty. We were taught abstinence. While abstinence is a great method to avoid pregnancy and disease, I feel it also the method least likely to be used by the group who is most at risk for the possible negative consequences of sex, teens and young adults. I believe that if teenagers were educated and taught about birth control, protection against STDs and STIs, and what exactly is happening with their bodies, they would be less likely to suffer those consequences.
