Australia has long since become a strong, wealthy nation and should dispense with the outdated association with the U.K, Monarchy. The long overdue cutting of the umbilical cord should be done with dignity.

Why would Australia want to join places like The Peoples "Republic" of China, the "Republic" of Cuba, the Union of Soviet Socialist "Republics", the "Republic" of Iran, the (apartied) "Republic" of S. Africa, etc.,etc. "Republics" have largely been failures because they are so easily "taken over" by political entities that can infiltrate the government and take the actual vote from the people. Today, due to instant media a TRUE Democracy is practical. Had the founding fathers had it I believe we would have always been a Democracy. Manipulation of the vote and Gerrymandering would be impractical. Conservatives would have to be honest and lobbying would not be effective!

Side: No, we should not.

You left out the United States of America which is a republic, and not, technically speaking, a democracy. Also, France, the Republic of Ireland and countless other nations. Regardless of their economic of military status they are all independent nations which won the freedom of self determination after a period of subjugation. Long live the Republic.
