Should Christians Celebrate Christmas?

There is still a debate about whether or not christmas is really christ's birthday. Hell, there's still debate about whether or not Jesus existed at all. Christmas looks like even less of a legitimate christian holiday when you consider that pagan cultures used to celebrate the winter solstice around this time and many traditions, such as ornamenting trees and keeping them in your home, actually have pagan origins. Are these simply modern day perversions by the NWO or something or is christmas just not christian to begin with?

If you start taking the fun parts out of your religious practices you're going to end up a fraction of what you are now. And you might dismiss that and say then only the true Christians will remain, but be honest with yourselves, it's going to be a blow to your self image and significance if in the end you have just 10% of your current flock still with you.

"One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it."

I can't help but notice that all the people claiming Christmas as a pagan holiday are pagans.

It's all good, there is plenty of Christmas to go around.

Hello F:

Well, I'm not a good person to ask, because I'm a Jewish atheist.. Nonetheless, I LOVE Christmas. I celebrate it.. Why shouldn't Christians?? Does celebrating Christmas REQUIRE a particular belief?? Uhh, NO.

I don't think it's much of a debate, more just some people stubbornly clinging to something most people already know is the wrong date. But yes, it should still be celebrated if they choose to.

The beautiful thing about Christmas is that it doesn't even have to be celebrated by "just" Christians. It's a beautiful holiday with festive lights, good feelings and an excuse to be with family and friends.

I'm an atheist and I have nothing against Christians OR non-Christians celebrating Christmas.

Like Columbus Day, Christmas is celebrating a myth. Its base story is the myth. I was told by a very devout religious university drop-out that the "myth" of the Nativity was "conceived" by St. Francis of Assisi as a "way" to explain the birth of Christ to his believers. I respect anyone's right to believe whatever they wish ... as I do, but I need to believe whatever research looks the most factual. When other facts become available, I would change my outlook. So far I only see only myths with authors of fiction ... like St Francis.

Christianity incorporated elements of paganism, such as Christmas day, under the early Roman Catholic church. If one truly believes in Christianity then they should abandon the elements of the religion that are pagan in nature (and there are many).

Yule was a pagan festival in Europe before Christianity but that is all the more reason to celebrate it for Europeans who have built upon the ancient traditions and with our art and music, and culture, we have embellished it with emotion and sentiment which has taken the christian doctrine of the Roman Empire and elevated it to a shared cultural identity. Regardless of ones religion or none, there is a long and beautiful tradition that can be cherished still even as an atheist customer of a Muslim-owned kebab shop in Andalucía can leave with his hot rake-away supper, greeting the staff with the words, "¡Feliz Navidad!"

There another illiterate. Please let your fellow atheists who are a bit enlightened educate you. I can't take that burden unto myself.

No, date for christs birth(Valid) celebration is inacurate. Since we can't have it accurate due to denominational political dogma and twists, we all just agree to reserve a day to represent the event that actually took place as one people to avoid conflict and repeatition of same event being celebrated more than once a year.

Since days are made for man not man for days, jesus endorses his stamp on the uniform decision.

It's settled.

Prove that Jesus existed irrefutably and I will vote up every argument you make whether I agree with it or not for the rest of the time I use this website.

Nice offer but i don't eat votes. I have been here for a year and people here in less time have twice the points i have why? i am no votes greedy.

To the main point i have done this too many times and i got bored of doing it over and over for several past months.

Recently some atheist set up a debate to say jesus didn't exist(search) and he was disgraced bitterly by mostly fellow atheists who had the knowledge and mastered dignity to admit it(rare).

If you are open minded, you can take a day or two surfing the internet for all existing evidence for your own perusal.

I will check my bookmarks later and see if i still have the links to my evidence.

I don't want to argue with my own words, it's tiring. How many more of you are gonna come and ask for the same thing at different time intervals (Library keepers).
