Should Foreign Languages Be Mandatory for High Schoolers?

Its common sense. Why were you able to learn english with no effort at all? Did you need rosetta stone CDs or mutliple classes per week? No. You were just born into a family that spoke it and you picked it up. The younger you are the more easily your brain can take in and process new information. So teaching a second language is far easier when children are young and they are still learning at a rapid pace than in high school where their brains have begun to slow down. As a high school student, my only complaint is the lack of sufficiently diverse language programs. I was strong-armed into taking Latin due to the Spanish and French classes being full. I believe that mandatory languages are applicable for all grade levels (I erred by specifying to high school only), to both educate students on different cultures, and to prepare them for the workplace. |
