Should Guantanamo Detainees Be Brought to the U.S.?

Obama's declared Guantanamo is to be closed, and so the current detainees need to be relocated. Presumably, they'd be moved to prisions in the U.S. However, even most Democrats, much less Republicans, are blocking this.

How are putting a few hundred alleged "terrorists" in our prisons any worse then putting the thousands of convicted thieves, rapists, and murders there?

Most of the states are more than willing to accept millions in government bailouts, but no one's willing to literally help the "war on terror".

Someone feel free to post this to the "Liberal Hypocrisy" debate.

QUESTION: No one’s talking about releasing them. We’re talking about putting them in prison somewhere in the United States.

REID: Can’t put them in prison unless you release them.

Am I the only one who thinks that sounds senile?

You know what pisses me off? When somebody has two arguments in the place of one. I've seen you do this so many times and now I'm just really pissed. Nobody upvoted or downvoted your first argument, so you could have just edited it and added some more! Why do you need to have both? Oh yeah... for the points!

Fair point. I try not to post redundant messages, and only do multiple posts when I have multiple arguments, since it's easier to keep track of replies.

I find it a little annoying when someone posts one gigantic wall of text, which everyone has to breakup and quote when replying.

Yes they should.

Do you want to send them somewhere, to another country, where they could escape? Where they might not stand trial?

I'd really like to see them come here, stand trial, and then be put in prison or the other. I don't fear these guys anymore than I do the other home grown mass murderers.

Actually I fear them less. If there were a natural disaster and a bunch of prisoners were released I'd look for the serial killers before I look for the terrorists.

Side: yes

There are already MANY convicted terrorists IN our SUPERMAX prisons. Are you kidding me? These guys would be chewed up and spit out if they were put in Federal prison. Most would have to be put in solitary just so they wouldn't be killed by the American population of prisoners. These guys are not as scary as some of the republicans would have you believe. Get over it guys and stop shitting your pants, we're supposed to be Americans. We can handle this.

Side: yes

Well, if we bring them here lets not give them any special privileges and put them in with the normal prison population. I don't mind too much if they get chewed up and spit out :)

Side: yes

I don't want any more of my tax money to go towards maintaining these guys. I say give them to Saudi Arabia. They have oil/money. Let them deal with them.

The Saudi theocracy finances a lot of terrorism. Most of the supposed 9/11 highjackers were Saudi. You want to send them to friendly territory.

Side: yes

No. I want to send them somewhere where they'll learn the "real" meaning of the word torture ;)

*"The Saudi theocracy finances a lot of terrorism. You want to send them to friendly territory."

That is incorrect. While thirteen of the nineteen hijackers were Saudi Arabian, the key planners of September 11 were an Egyptian, a Lebanese, and a Pakistani raised in Kuwait. Usamah Bin Laden was a harsh critic of the Suadi government and he specifically chose Saudis for hijackers to hurt US relations with the country. The hijackers were members of a terrorist group and would have been "shot on sight if they had shown up at the Saudi capital" according to Juan Cole the Professor of History at the University of Michigan. Usamah Bin Laden, while born in Saudi Arabia, had his citizenship revoked in 1995. Al-Qaeda itself has attacked Saudi Arabia many times and between 2003 and 2006 al-Qaeda terrorists killed approximately 150 people in Saudi Arabia.

"I don't want any more of my tax money to go towards maintaining these guys"

How do you think Guantanamo was funded?

Side: yes

Exactly. No more money going to maintain them. They've used up enough. Maybe if they let us waterboard them some but other wise, no ;)
