Depends on the age, but most of the time yeah. You wouldnt even imagine all the crazy stuff I would have done if my mother wasnt there to stop me.

Ideally that would be great, however as of now it's not possible. Most families need two incomes dependent on where they live. My husband makes decent money but his job doesn't have benefits and my job may not make a whole lot of money but it covers very good benefits. It would be great to be a stay at home parent but I also know my kids love daycare/school and the friends they have there. It does have a social benefit for them.

@Mint

Thoughts on 1 full-time worker and 1 part-time?

Also, it seems to me, we are living in an age when 'work at home' opportunities are an option (though, clearly, much more limited). For instance, as one potential option, there are online tutoring sites one can be employed by on their own schedule, such as Chegg (which pays a decent bit for a part-time job, depending upon how many problems one solves).

Also, how much money do you think is necessary, roughly speaking, to cross a threshold point where 'comfortable living' is feasible?

My husband does work from home, but we still need daycare since it's improbable to watch the kids and actually DO work at the same time. If the main money maker is able to work full time AND cover benefits then yes, I would think part time would be best, personally I would love that, but it has to work for the entire household.

Depends on the people and location. Some area's have more job opportunities yet a higher cost of living. We are fairly comfortable yet we do go without things many times simply because they are either A. deemed not necessary or B. a waste of money.

IF I lost my job we would only but hurting because of the loss of benefits, IF my husband lost his job we could tighten our belts and survive off my paycheck but we would be dropping a good portion of the services we currently enjoy (netflix, hulu...etc...) but both instances would have us pulling the kiddos out of daycare which would be a loss for them since we live in a rural area. So it's REALLY going to depend on where you are, what you are fine with sacrificing and what you are comfortable with doing yourself in terms of maintenance and constructions if something goes wrong.

Depends

If you can afford a quality daycare which performs education similar to actual schooling then your kids will greatly benefit from it. They'd get structure, interpersonal experience with other kids, and a daily change of scenery besides simply being home for years on end. I think our two boys have leapfrogged ahead in development thanks to their excellent daycare. Often they come home and say or do something which makes us proud and which we know they didn't learn at home from one of us.

If you can only afford the bare minimum daycare which essentially keeps your kid alive until you pick them up then that's not so good.

But on the flip side with parents themselves, if you have well educated parents who have their act together and are good people then kids get a lot of good things for them. But people of all walks of life have kids - including criminals, creeps, abuserts, etc. There are definitely scenarios where kids staying home with those particular parents does far more harm than good.
