"Watch TV, use computer, play video games" are all activities after school; they need more activity outside of school and not within the school day. It is the parents responsibility to encourage kids to be more active and less time on inside activities and not the government. If the question is geared towards primary school, they already have 2 or 3 recesses during the day. What is the recommended activity time? 50-60 minutes a day, so 3 x 15=45 minutes. That is only 5-15 more minutes. In secondary school, PE is only required for two credits, and post secondary is not required. I thought we were anti-government control. Is it not also government control if the kids are forced to do school work for those 45 minutes - rather that exercise? Which will help them more in life - geography or PE? Geography might be knowledge - but PE is what'll give them a long, healthy life. Side: PE should be mandatory

I understand that physical exercise is important for both the physical and psychological development of a child. However I feel that enforcing PE in school would only discourage them from taking part in extracurricular sport activities. I think that a school regime that encourages children to take up sport would be more useful. A regime that gives them the CHOICE to participate in a range of sports and that shows them that physically playing something can be more entertaining than doing it from the couch on a video game Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory
What you stated are not all of what kids do. I am a gamer, but I love going outside, playing, camping, wrestling around with my friends. I am not always going to be found on video games. I generally play video games whenever I am unable to reach my friends. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory
PE should NOT be mandatory for kids who are active in sports outside of school. At age 8, my daughter spends 12 hours a week at gymnastics practice. If she WANTS to participate in PE during school, that should be her choice, not the schools. I do believe that schools should ask Parents at the beginning of school if they are on a team sports & if so, they should have an option of doing something else, if they choose to do so. It is not a problem now, she likes to be active, but if in HS, she is still doing her sport, which will require more hours as she gets better, she should be given a choice. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory
In this age of the 21st century, it is undeniable that knowledge is the key to success. But all these intelligence will come to naught when you suffer from the impact of obesity. When your tiny brain gets squished smaller over time by the unsaturated juicy fats that have gathered in your skull, you start losing all intellect that you have ever gathered in your life. So whats the point of having knowledge if you lose them anyway. So i propose that PE be mandatory in schools. With the sole aim of eliminating the exponential increase in fat people. Aiming to transform all males into THE INCREDIBLE HULK, and females into WONDERWOMAN. It would really suck to leave the face of this earth knowing that you're going to die a fat man, ostracized by the entire world. So START your route to becoming a fit person now. I believe that PE be mandatory because the route to being healthy starts from young. There is an urgent need to educate these teenagers, teaching them the skills of staying healthy, so that they can be taught the knowledge of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As the saying goes, "give a man a fish, and he'll be full for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll be full for a lifetime". So, earthlings! before its too late to apologise, oooohhh, its too lateeee... come together with me as we make the world a healthier place. Animals have fats in their body to keep themselves warm from the harshest winters. But we are humans, that are able to enjoy the comfort of thick sweaters because WE CAN WEAR CLOTHES. This shows that we are not meant to be fat. SO PEACE OUT!!!!! I LOVE YOU <33333 fats for life! Side: PE should be mandatory
PE is important. Any form of exercise (especially today) should be encouraged. A healthy body and mind is more essential than just a healthy mind. Ofcourse parents should encourage them to do physical activities outside of school. Ofcourse kids should be more willing to do physical activities outside of school. But they don't. There isn't a way of forcing kids to do physical activities except for in school. Only fat/ugly/geeky kids hate P.E. Side: PE should be mandatory
Fat/ugly/geeky kids? I am thin, I would like to believe I am attractive, and I am friends with what you stereotypical people would call "popular". I enjoy guitar and I occasionally ride bikes. I am in good shape and sports are fun to me. I DO NOT participate in PE. And frankly, I hate it. I enjoy things because I CHOOSE to do them, not because I am being forced. Yes, Parents are the critical for encouraging physical lifestyles but not schools. School is hardly the only way to enforce physical activity. Some kids just don't give a shit. So they choose not to to participate no matter what. Those are the kids who parents are called yet they don't care either. So, they get a F or D, and they are content. Therefore, it falls back on the parents to encourage physical lifestyles. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory
Same goes for other subjects :D P.E. is a subject that I loved. Most people in my year and class loved it too. Only the 'intellectual' types hated it. By intellectual I mean the types who loved sitting there reading books but didn't get much higher grades than the average student. Also being at one of the academically best schools in the country where you'd expect to see more geeks. We shouldn't have to stop a great subject that is essential for ones development in and out of school because of a growing number of fatties and computer nerds. Fuck that. Of course it should. If you think about how many people there are out there who don't get any exercise at all, all those kids who are obese/overweight or heading that way. Sometimes PE in school is the only real exercise they get and it's important for them to get that time. Side: PE should be mandatory

Exercise is important just like education is important. I have many problems with the public school system already, but if math and English are to be mandatory, so should PE. (all three subjects that i love, by the way). As someone mentioned, coaches do tend to pick favorites and the class for the fat kid can be very humiliating, but guess what, same shit in math and english. Teachers have favorites in those classes as well, and the dumb kid can be very humiliated when he gets and F or doesn't know the answer to a question. To all those PC "show compassion for the fat kid" people out there, get over it. All kids have problems in some aspects in school, and it's in that time for them to learn to not be a little bitch about it. Side: PE should be mandatory

Granted, the taxes spent on public schooling is a waste and unfair not only private school parents, but the public monopoly of schooling. That is a different subject. Nobody gains from mandatory PE. PE is a waste because two reasons which in order to pass even with a A. 1. Show up each class session. 2. Look as if you give a damn. Math and English is mandatory because you actually have to do work in order to do well. In terms of most important classes, it is not Math, English, then PE, it is Math, English then Science. PE is not even in the top ten. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory
People who are actually good at PE gain from it. Also, you have to actually try in order to pass the class. If anything, fat kids shouldn't be all bent out of shape for taking PE, because they can still pass as long as they do what they can. Math and English are a different story, for even if you try your hardest you can still fail. And plenty of dumb kids do. Side: PE should be mandatory

Look in Maths and English people do take favourites but those are people who do good, Maths and English can be helped but if your not good at sports then your not good at sports. Plus you don't have to run around in shorts and t-shirt embarrising yourself if you have really hairy legs or if your fat in English and Maths plus by the way loads of people who hate PE would rather do 10 Maths and 10 English than 1 PE. SO your point is NOT valid. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory
Should P.E be mandatory yes.. is it ever going to get gets to be less obeise and active and athletic no.. but the exercise in P.E might be the only physical activity some kids have besides having to dig around for the remote..and when you mention the fact that teachers play favorites? well let me tell you every teacher has a favortie in every class, it is just something else that is wrong with the public school system. I am a highschool student and i play sports and i am very active and i think it is pathetic to see these kids who can't even jog for ten minutes without looking like they are going to pass out.. It is not the school's fault that the parents of these children do not encourage physical exercise or even have interest in their childrens lives.. School P.E is the only activity that a lot of kids have because of lack of motivation in a home life.. Side: PE should be mandatory

Exercise is necessary. And intelligence is necessary. PE however is not. I'll reveal a bit here, and say that yeah I'm a high school student. Currently (because I have a full schedule) I have to take sports outside of school and not do PE. Instead the credits necessary for graduation in the PE category get waived for my sport participation. I do plenty of exercise outside (swimming, biking, running), and it's enjoyable. Frees up the lungs, burns calories, strengthens the body. I got none of that enjoyment when I did that mandatory year of freshman PE. We were forced to be in large classes, the teachers picked favorites, and it was generally demoralizing. I wouldn't want to be FORCED to go through that again, after all, I want to have fun in school, while also learning. Higher achieving students (who sometimes have 2 or more AP/honors/accelerated/advanced) classes are sometimes stuck between a rock and a hard place because of the mandatory PE credits. I'm not going to be able to have a free period my entire high school career, and I'm going to be busy after school trying to make up the PE credits. I won't be able to get a job, and my performance in my classes might suffer. It seems like there's a common theme here. PE helps no one. Those who don't like/want to exercise will do poorly in PE and get a just barely passing grade, while those who wish to achieve in life are held back. So who is this helping? By the way, I play little to no video games, rarely watch TV, and only use the computer to get info about school from my friends. So instead of only "Go to school, watch TV, use computer, play video games" I play in the Jazz band and orchestra, participate in Safe School Ambassadors, have 3 AP classes (and 1 honors), do swimming and cross country, and have a social life. Do you see any need for an unnecessary graduation requirement? Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory

So should cooking, and credit (i.e. how credit works, etc), and the arts and humanities, and world religions, and world cultures, and extensive government classes. But you can't require everything. Why not let people choose what they think is important? Also, my PE class was very little working out and a lot of playing baseball, basketball, volleyball, etc. If PE was cardio, weights and physical fitness it would be a lot more useful imo. School isn't a place for exercise. It's a place for learning. If the kids can't exercise at home then the schools shouldn't be forced to have it for students. The school system would have to pay for a new position just because the children can't exercise at home. Schools now provide students with about 1 hour of play time per week. If you added that 1 hour to the school day then that would be 4 hours in one month wasted. People want higher test scores. By taking away that time and giving it back to the core teachers they will have more academic time. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory

PE shouldn't be mandatory because not everyone needs/wants to exercise. Math shouldn't be mandatory because not everyone needs/wants math. Lab shouldn't be mandatory because not everyone needs/wants science. Lab is a waste of time for someone who is going to major in Shakespeare, as PE is a waste of time for someone who is going to major in math... If a kid is gonna be a fata$$ he's gonna be a fata$$. You can give him the ups and downs of being a lard and lets them choose for themselves. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory

ya but what about kids who dont like pe who are scared to be good because while preforming they might make a mistake and people will laugh also people get hurt...just a while ago i heard about a boy who broke his arm in soccer...i mean come on soccer of all sports Side: PE should be mandatory
ok so i have just recently decided to change my opinions on this issue. i used to say no its should not be mandatory cause what the hell does sit ups, pull ups, and jumping jacks have to do with what or who i wanted to be. but as the years have passed i have nocticed and realized just how much the lack of excercise can effect a person, a family, or a whole community. I now think That pE should be mandatory every year of schooling for the simple fact that in alot of homes children do not have the knowledge of the effects of daily physical excercise i think that with mandatory pE participation our youth would develop more healthy excercising habits thus leading them to a healthy functioning adulthood Side: PE should be mandatory
I believe PE shouldn't be mandatory IF that specific person is doing a after school sport. If your on the schools sport team whats the point of going to PE in the middle of the day and then doing a sport in the afternoon, you get more of a workout from the sport than the PE I guarantee it. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory
"Should PE be mandatory in schools?" Hell, school should not be mandatory. Then, when people are free to decide to go to school or not, and free to decide which school to attend, the issue of mandatory this or that will sort itself out. Want mandatory PE? Pick a school that has it! Don't want mandatory PE? Well, in this scenario, you know what to do. Easy huh? All we need to do is dismantle the entire public education system! Give it a few decades. Maybe by then, we can end "socialized education" :) Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory

Look I'm doing PE at the moment at school, well I had to miss last year because of a medical problem but anyway I'm not good at any sport and I mean it. Espeacially FOOTBALL AND RUDBY which schools seem to be so fond of. I mean what is the point, there are loads of fat people in my school and some are really good at sports but they are still fat. Also people who are not good at sport just get embarresed. PLUS the sports people do doesn't help in later life in one bit. I know many people out of High School and they are still rubish at PE and didn't learn anything from it. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory

PE is stupid in schools, it doesn't help at all for obesity. Plus people who are not good at PE just get bullied and blamed for failure of a team. I know I am. I'm really bad at football and rugby which is what everyone in my class love apart from one person but at least he's good though. Also shorts shouldn't have to be worn in summer, people are embarresed by their legs for various reasons like hairyness, fat or too thin. I have saw some people fail at their studys because of a fear of PE. Its very unfair and espeacially since you don't get any qualification for the compulsory PE only the optional full course version. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory
P.E. is only a time consumer for a class, and lets the athletic kids have a good time but what about the kids who don't want to be there. People constantly say it teaches good health and healthier habit but so does a heath class that doesnt involve unecessary exercise. It is also expensive to keep running and it is pointless to force kids to participate if they dont want to. Side: PE shouldn't be mandatory
