Should SOUTH PARK show the image of the prophet Muhammad?

In the latest episode titled "200", South Park has addressed, once again, the issue of showing an image of Muhammad.

In an attempt to not provoke terrorist retaliation, the town dresses the prophet in a bear suit to conceal his image, and the prophet is carefully transported from place to place in ways that hide his appearance.

The plot continues in this weeks next episode titled "201" and many are speculating if Comedy Central will allow the image to be shown.

It should be noted that South Park has already shown an image of the prophet in the episode "Super Best Friends" aired in 2001 (prior to 9/11) in which he was shown to be part of a super hero league comprised of prophets of all religions. That episode did not provoke a reaction from the Muslim community (perhaps because he was shown in a positive light?).

Skip a few years however (post 9/11), and things are different. A Denmark newspaper prints a few cartoons of the prophet carrying bombs. This sparks an outcry from the Muslim community and death threats start to fly in every direction. At this point South Park aires an episode ("Cartoon Wars") which addresses this very issue, but in the end Comedy Central censored the image with a black square and a note stating their refusal to show the image.

This time however, it looks like creators Tray Parker and Matt Stone are back to settle the issue once and for all.

Do you think South Park should show the image of the prophet or not?

Yes most definitely. If South Park is able to make fun of religions Muslims should not be excluded.

This is a good debate and I think South Park addressed this fairly well in Cartoon Wars. Many people are quick to defend freedom of speech and expression when it is not really under attack, but if we truly value these rights then we should be willing to put safety on the line to preserve them, right? On the other hand, how many innocent injuries or deaths is it worth to show an image on television?

As it is I am somewhat conflicted because Matt and Trey have been threatened with death over these recent episodes and I hate to think about the possibility of a senseless loss of life. However, they are smart men and undoubtedly know the risks they are taking to make this statement. I just hope that no bystanders are hurt.

Yes, Freedom of Speech > the feelings of some prick.

It's bad enough that the Muslims already have Europe by the balls, I just hope that America does not follow.

Well, last time Comedy Central did not allow them, so they instead showed Jesus and Bush crapping on the American flag.

I'm hoping that this time CC will let them, because there's nothing more that I'd like to see than the defiling of Islam.

Seriously, when I get the resources to make a fairly budgeted movie, i'm shitting on the Quran in that.

Yes. The creeds of religions (like the idea that an image of Muhammad shouldnt be shown) only apply to those who follow that religion. No one has the right to force others to follow their religion- and if they threaten violence I think they should be deported or put to jail for a long time

Nobody has any right to speak against anyones belief, faith and ideals. "This is freedom ". one believes in GOD,GODS or even no GOD that is his/her choice.."This is freedom" ...playing with or disturbing somebodies emotions is bullying and cannot be called "Freedom" .

NO BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO WORSHIP A MAN LIKE CHRISTIANS WORSHIP JESUS(CAMERA DID NOT EXIST AT THE TIME OF JESUS) SO HOW DO CHRISITIAN KNOW IF THE JESUS IN THE IMAGE IS THE SAME AS THE REAL JESUS) WE REVERE PROPHET MUHAMMAD (MPBUH) HIM THROUGH HAVING KNOWLEDGE OF HIM AS A PROPHET AND A TEACHER AND A MODEL. WE DON'T WANT A FALSE IMAGE OF OUR PROPHET..... IT IS HIGHLY OFFENSIVE TO US.... SO WHY JUST DO IT.

Islam isn't entitled to a position above criticism, mockery, and parody. Muhammad should be mocked just like any and every other mythological character.

Christians do not worship Jesus, per se. They believe that he is both the son of God and God himself - but the version of God on earth. Catholics, on the other hand, pray to their saints.
